Teaching Reading in Head Start & Pre-School @ CMC in Glenwood Springs
Aug 3 @ 5:00 pm – 7:30 pm
Class Description

Students who don’t read well by second grade often find themselves referred to special education. But most of us don’t know how we learned to read and can be at a loss when young children fail to read. Experts” are not always helpful either. For example, some standards set a goal that beginning students identify and name letters of the alphabet by the end of the year. Yet the names of letters (“a” “b” “c”) are very seldom the sounds associated with letters when reading. So naming letters and singing the alphabet can even interfere with learning to read. This workshop will introduce Head Start/Pre-school teachers and paraprofessionals to a way of reading that fits the abilities of young children and engages them in a fun exploration of associating sounds with shapes and letters. Participants will be asked to fine tune the approach based on their experience with young children. (A Certificate of Completion will be available for ongoing state certification purposes.)
