When Ice Ruled Leadville I @ CMC in Leadville
Jul 9 @ 8:00 am – 9:30 am
GEOLOGY INSTRUCTOR VINCE MATTHEWS
Class Description:

Dr. Vince Matthews has taught at five different institutions of higher education, holding tenure at two. He was the State Geologist of Colorado and Director of the Colorado Geological Survey. He is Senior Author of the multi award-winning book Messages in Stone — Colorado’s Colorful Geology and compiler of A Tourist Guide to Colorado Geology. These classes fill quickly. Register soon!

Leadville’s spectacular scenery reflects a time when ice covered and formed much of the landscape. It was a time of valleys filled with thousands of feet of ice; of 600-foot-deep lakes forming, then catastrophically emptying in a day. Learn to read the signs of this classic glacial terrain in the field. Generations of geologists all over America have studied Turquoise Lake in their classrooms. Now you can study its marvels first hand. Follow the glacially dammed lake from Malta to Buena Vista. Experience periglacial features such as patterned ground, rock glaciers, and sackungen.

A 1/2 mile of hiking is required, dress appropriately for the hike and the weather. Pack a lunch or bring lunch money.

Alpine Environment Wildflower Guided Walks

wildflower1There are phenomenal wildflowers not too far from your back door. Professor, farmer, and serious botanist Miskwa Yellowknife will lead these field classes on a tour through the colorful flowers of our alpine environment. Dr. Yellowknife will help participants to identify the unique flora of the Ball Mountain and Mosquito Pass areas east of Leadville. Alpine environments are harsh, and put special stresses on the flora which has adapted in numerous ways. Alpine plant communities are unique and highly fragile and one of the most vulnerable to the effects of climate change. The class will identify the flowers of the Ball Mountain area by their scientific and common names, allowing the participants to get to know these very unique plants, which include some native orchids. Participants must be able to walk short distances over uneven ground, carry water, and rain gear. Meet at Colorado Mountain College, Don Hix Memorial Gazebo. Field guides will be provided. Please note that neither wildflowers nor weather is predictable, and we may change the location to take advantage of blooming locations.
