Jul 7 @ 10:00 am – Aug 1 @ 11:00 am

Join Dr. Gabrielle Orsi of the Office of Innovations in Teaching and Learning for this fully online training on the art of teaching. This training will be held via a Canvas course with a weekly web conference. Some of the weekly web conferences will feature a guest speaker. We will read and discuss together the book McKeachie’s Teaching Tips, 14th edition (2013). The book will be supplied to course participants. Course objectives include:

  • Building an online community with colleagues
  • Discussing new teaching tips and ideas from the text, each other, and the guest presenters
  • Reflecting upon our own teaching styles and what we would like to incorporate into our craft
  • Having an opportunity to sample various technologies used or mentioned in this course and consider using them in your own teaching

Total completion time is estimated to be approximately 20 hours. Please register for this training via WebAdvisor to obtain access to the Canvas course.

We suggest as well that you visit this webpage ahead of time to check your browser and ensure sure it’s ready for use with Blackboard Collaborate webconferencing. If you are not familiar with Blackboard Collaborate, then we suggest that you watch this 7-minute Participant Orientation tutorial video.

Collaborate Web Conferencing
Jul 25 @ 9:30 am – 10:30 am

Haven’t tried Blackboard Collaborate yet? This is CMC’s standard college-wide webconferencing tool. It’s an amazing way to communicate real-time with your students online, enabling you to hold online office hours, study sessions, class meetings, and more. You can chat (type), speak with audio to the class, use a webcam to transmit your video to the group, show a PowerPoint, webpage, video, draw together on a whiteboard. You can also record the whole session with just a click, and paste the link to the recording in your Canvas course for students who missed the session or for students who would like to review it. We will discuss:

  • Creating a session
  • Session settings
  • Optional components such as microphones, headsets, webcams, digital stylus/tablet
  • Browser security settings and other issues when connecting to a session
  • Hand raising and using emoticons for feedback and engagement
  • Polling; responding to a poll question
  • Chat
  • Using the whiteboard inside your session
  • Presenting a slideshow
  • Adjusting your audio and video settings
  • Desktop and application sharing, leading a webtour
  • Recording a session for students to view later
  • Online tutorials and resources to teach participants how to use Collaborate

NOTE: Elluminate Live! is now called “Collaborate”. CMC is exclusively using the newest version. This session will be held online. You will be emailed the information you’ll need to join the session after you register.

When Ice Ruled Leadville @ Leadville Campus
Jul 26 @ 8:00 am – 5:00 pm

Photo of VInce Matthews

Dr. Vince Matthews, one of the top experts in the field of geology, is leading this one-day workshop. Participants will never look at this region’s scenic beauty the same way after this day of studying it first-hand. Leadville’s spectacular scenery reflects a time when ice covered and formed much of the landscape. It was a time of valleys filled with thousands of feet of ice; of 600-foot-deep lakes forming, then catastrophically emptying in a day.

Participants will learn to read the signs of this classic glacial terrain in the field. Generations of geologists all over America have studied Turquoise Lake in their classrooms. Now you can study its marvels first hand. Follow the glacially dammed lake from Malta to Buena Vista. Experience periglacial features such as patterned ground, rock glaciers, and sackungen.
