Collaborate Web Conferencing
Apr 25 @ 10:00 am – 11:30 am

Haven’t tried Blackboard Collaborate yet? It’s an amazing way to communicate real-time with your students online. Think of the possibilities—online office hours, study sessions, class meetings…You can chat (type), speak with audio to the class, use a webcam to transmit your video to the group, show a PowerPoint, webpage, video, draw together on a whiteboard… You can also record the whole session with just a click, and paste the link to the recording in your online Canvas course for students who missed the session or for students who would like to review it. We will discuss:

  • Creating a session
  • Session settings
  • Optional components such as microphones, headsets, webcams, digital stylus/tablet
  • Browser security settings and other issues when connecting to a session
  • Hand raising and using emoticons for feedback and engagement
  • Polling; responding to a poll question
  • Chat
  • Using the whiteboard inside your session
  • Presenting a slideshow
  • Adjusting your audio and video settings
  • Desktop and application sharing, leading a webtour
  • Recording a session for students to view later
  • Online tutorials and resources to teach participants how to use Collaborate
  • Possible uses for teaching, lecture capture, conferences, office hours…

NOTE: Elluminate Live! is now called “Blackboard Collaborate.” This session will be held online. You will be emailed the information you’ll need to join the session after you register.

Prerequisite
Before our session, you will need to watch this 7-minute Participant Orientation tutorial video. We also recommend that you visit this webpage with your preferred browser. It will check to make sure your browser is ready for Blackboard Collaborate.

This is a live online course, so you will need a computer with highspeed internet access. You will also need computer speakers (built-in or separate) or a headset to hear the instructor and group.

Canvas Draft State Webinar
Apr 30 @ 5:00 pm – 6:00 pm

Learn all about the new, number-one-requested feature in Canvas, coming to CMC’s Canvas system for the Summer 2014 semester: Draft State! Draft State allows an instructor to make Assignments, Quizzes, Modules, Pages, and Discussions invisible to students and exclude them from grade calculations. Draft State is designed specifically for instructors and affects nearly every part of Canvas when it’s activated for your course. We will address:

  • how to work with Draft state as an instructor with Modules, Pages, Assignments, Discussions, and Quizzes
  • setting up your course’s homepage with Draft State
  • what students will and won’t see as you work with Draft State
  • We’ll finish with open Canvas Q&A.

Read about Draft State now at http://tinyurl.com/draftstate
We will use a Colorado Mountain College “Meet Me” phone conference line 1805 for our audio and we’ll use this link for our meeting’s visual/screensharing component: https://join.me/cmcinnovations

Welcome to Canvas: Basics Online.
This session will take place completely online in the Canvas learning management system, at coloradomtn.instructure.com. It will take place over 4 days: it begins on Monday morning and ends Thursday evening.

There are deadlines for each day’s work to keep the group moving forward together, but participants may work on the assignments at any time of day or night, from any computer (PC or Mac) with an Internet connection and either Firefox, Safari, Chrome, or Internet Explorer. In Canvas: Basics Online we will cover how to:

  • Log into Canvas
  • Modify your profile and Notifications in Canvas
  • Make your course “published” so that students can see it
  • Create an announcement
  • Create Pages and add text, videos, and links to the course’s Pages
  • Create a Discussion
  • Work with modules
  • Create Assignments
  • How to work with Draft State and make items in your course invisible or visible to students
  • Course copying for the future
  • And more!

In addition to these tasks, the group will also be communicating via the course discussions. Participants will be engaging with Canvas as students and will carry out some of the assigned tasks in the Canvas course for this training. However, some of the tasks must be done outside of this training’s course, in a “sandbox” course where the participant has an instructor role. This “sandbox” course will be provided for course participants. This training concludes with a final quiz on Canvas topics. Questions about these courses? Please contact the instructor.
