Last Chance on Earth to See a Dying Wonder

The spectacular Coral Reefs are victims of climate change. Some of the most amazing reefs have already disappeared.

Chuck Dayton a retired environmental lawyer sailed across the central Pacific Ocean this summer, visiting islands we dream of as paradise, only to be hit hard with the realization that we are one of the last generations who will experience the Earth as we now know it. When acclaimed author Deni Béchard first learned of the last living bonobos—great apes that are, alongside the chimpanzee, our closest relatives in the animal kingdom—he was astonished. How could the world accept the extinction of this majestic species, along with the rainforest they call home?

As he looked more closely, Béchard discovered that one relatively small NGO, the Bonobo Conservation Initiative (BCI), has done more to save bonobos and their natural habitat than any number of far larger organizations. Based on extensive travels in the Congo and Rwanda, and hundreds of hours of interviews with conservationists all over the world, this book explores how BCI has been so successful, offering in the process a truly postcolonial model of conservation.

For a quick explanation of Deni’s account and point of view, check out this short video:
