OUT-snowshoe-storm.jpgThe first class meeting day is mandatory. In order to receive a certificate of completion ALL classes must be attended. Students must be at least 18 years old to register and will be responsible for their own avalanche equipment (beacon, shovel, probe pole). All students must have back country snow gear (AT or Tele skis) with skins, or snowboard and snowshoes, or split-board with skins. A one ride lift day pass may be needed (about $33) and a $25 fee will be collected at first class for AIARE material.

Class meets T&W, 12/3-12/10 from 6p-8:30p at the Aspen campus, and  Sa&Su, 12/7-12/8, from 8a-4:05p, in the field.

 Angela Glover Blackwell, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of PolicyLink

Angela Glover Blackwell, started PolicyLink in 1999 and continues to drive its mission of advancing economic and social equity. PolicyLink has become a leading voice in the movement to use public policy to improve access and opportunity for all low-income people and communities of color, particularly in the areas of health, housing, transportation, education, and infrastructure.

Blackwell is the co-author of Uncommon Common Ground: Race and America’s Future (W.W. Norton & Co., 2010), and contributed to Ending Poverty in America: How to Restore the American Dream (The New Press, 2007) In 2013, Blackwell and PolicyLink collaborated with the Center for American Progress to write and release All In Nation: An America that Works for All. Blackwell earned a bachelor’s degree from Howard University, and a law degree from the University of California at Berkeley. She serves on numerous boards and has served on The President’s Advisory Council on Faith-based and Neighborhood Partnerships.

New college president to address how access to higher education transforms lives, communities.

Dr. Carrie Besnette HauserWhat would draw a high-powered, rising star – one who has built a career on enhancing educational access for people who might not otherwise have that opportunity – to serve the small towns on Colorado’s Western Slope?

As Dr. Carrie Besnette Hauser explains, it’s because of the opportunity to help lead Colorado Mountain College toward becoming the premier and most innovative institution of its kind.

Hauser, the ninth and newest president of CMC, and the second woman in the job, will address her vision for the college and for student success as the inaugural speaker of the 2014 Roaring Fork Cultural Council speakers’ series in Carbondale March 10. She will also share her thoughts about how access to affordable, high-quality education can transform lives and elevate communities’ economic and social vitality.

“Our new strategic plan is driving us toward becoming the most inclusive, innovative, student-centered college in the country,” Hauser says. “We believe this vision will help us to elevate the economic, social, cultural and environmental vitality of the incredible communities we serve.”

Dr. Stephen Mulkey

This is a CMC internal conference for Sustainability faculty, staff, students and community partners.

The speaker will be Dr. Stephen Mulkey who assumed the post of president at Unity College in Unity, ME, on 1 July 2011. Prior to his appointment to Unity, Dr. Mulkey served as director of the program in Environmental Science at the University of Idaho from 2008 through spring 2011. As director, he led an initiative obtaining National Science Foundation funding for the creation of a new Professional Science Master’s degree in Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences, which included degree tracks in Sustainability Science and Climate Change. With major funding from NASA, he directed a statewide project focused on climate change education. View Dr. Mulkey speaking at the Delhi Sustainable Development Summit.
