Set against a rich backdrop of Mozart’s greatest hits, an encore performance of the Tony Award-winning play “Amadeus” by Peter Shaffer will run for two nights only at the Wheeler Opera House on Jan. 16 and 17 at 7 p.m.

“Amadeus” won five Tony Awards, including Best Play, and the 1984 film earned 13 Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Based on a fictionalized rivalry between court composers Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Antonio Salieri, “Amadeus” explores the links among genius, jealousy and madness.

A production of Colorado Mountain College’s theater program, the show ran Oct. 18-27 at CMC’s New Space Theatre on the Spring Valley campus. It generated so much community buzz that the college was prompted to take the show on the road. “The timing just worked out to bring it to the Wheeler,” said Brad Moore, adjunct theater instructor at the college.

Moore directs the production that features the first CMC theater graduate, Nick Garay, as Amadeus. Garay was last seen in Aspen this summer as Romeo in the Hudson Reed Ensemble’s production of “Romeo and Juliet.” Gary Ketzenbarger, director of the college’s theater program, portrays Salieri. The cast is rounded out by current CMC students and faculty, as well as recent graduates of the theater program.

Seats can be reserved at aspenshowtix.com or 920-5770. Tickets for “Amadeus” are $20.
