CMC Theatre brings ‘Amadeus’ to the Wheeler Opera House stage @ Wheeler Opera House

Set against a rich backdrop of Mozart’s greatest hits, an encore performance of the Tony Award-winning play “Amadeus” by Peter Shaffer will run for two nights only at the Wheeler Opera House on Jan. 16 and 17 at 7 p.m.

“Amadeus” won five Tony Awards, including Best Play, and the 1984 film earned 13 Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Based on a fictionalized rivalry between court composers Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Antonio Salieri, “Amadeus” explores the links among genius, jealousy and madness.

A production of Colorado Mountain College’s theater program, the show ran Oct. 18-27 at CMC’s New Space Theatre on the Spring Valley campus. It generated so much community buzz that the college was prompted to take the show on the road. “The timing just worked out to bring it to the Wheeler,” said Brad Moore, adjunct theater instructor at the college.

Moore directs the production that features the first CMC theater graduate, Nick Garay, as Amadeus. Garay was last seen in Aspen this summer as Romeo in the Hudson Reed Ensemble’s production of “Romeo and Juliet.” Gary Ketzenbarger, director of the college’s theater program, portrays Salieri. The cast is rounded out by current CMC students and faculty, as well as recent graduates of the theater program.

Collaborate Web Conferencing

Haven’t tried Collaborate, formerly known as Elluminate Live!, yet? It’s an amazing way to communicate real-time with your students online. Think of the possibilities—online office hours, study sessions, class meetings…You can chat (type), speak with audio to the class, use a webcam to transmit your video to the group, show a PowerPoint, webpage, video, draw together on a whiteboard… You can also record the whole session with just a click, and paste the link to the recording in your online Canvas course for students who missed the session or for students who would like to review it. We will discuss:

  • Creating a session
  • Session settings
  • Optional components such as microphones, headsets, webcams, digital stylus/tablet
  • Browser security settings and other issues when connecting to a session
  • Hand raising and using emoticons for feedback and engagement
  • Polling; responding to a poll question
  • Chat
  • Using the whiteboard inside your session
  • Presenting a slideshow
  • Adjusting your audio and video settings
  • Desktop and application sharing, leading a webtour
  • Recording a session for students to view later
  • Online tutorials and resources to teach participants how to use Collaborate
  • Possible uses for teaching, lecture capture, conferences, office hours…

NOTE: Elluminate Live! is now called “Collaborate”. CMC is exclusively using the newest version. This session will be held online. You will be emailed the information you’ll need to join the session after you register.

Prerequisite
Before our session, you will need to watch this 7-minute Participant Orientation tutorial video. We also recommend that you visit this webpage with your preferred browser. It will check to make sure your browser is ready for Blackboard Collaborate.

Required equipment
This is a live online course, so you will need a computer with highspeed internet access. You will also need computer speakers (built-in or separate) or a headset to hear the instructor and group.

Suggested equipment
Microphone (or headset with microphone): If you have a microphone, you can speak to the group.
Webcam: If you have a webcam, you can transmit your video to the group.

“A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” is the comedic musical adaptation of the ancient Roman plays written by Plautus. The story centers on Pseudolus, a crafty slave who seeks to gain his freedom by winning the hand of a woman for his young master. The large cast has 17 roles. Performance dates are Apr. 4-6 and 10-13.
 
Those who wish to audition should prepare a one- to two-minute monologue and a short cut of a musical number that demonstrates the individual’s range (please provide sheet music). Callbacks will be Jan. 19 from 1 to 5 p.m.

Each class is focused on a heart-related theme that brings awareness of how yoga brings us off the mat and into the world. Canvas Gradebook & SpeedGrader Webinar

Join us for a 60-minute live online webinar via Blackboard Collaborate that will introduce CMC faculty to grading in Canvas. We will demonstrate the Canvas Gradebook and SpeedGrader.  This is not a hands-on training. This course assumes that participants already have some experience using Canvas, or have taken Canvas: Basics Online or another Canvas training. We will address:

  • the kinds of graded items that Canvas offers
  • a brief introduction to the Gradebook and its features
  • how to find, launch, and use the Canvas SpeedGrader to grade Assignments and Discussions.
  • inputting grades, messaging students, and muting assignments in the Gradebook.
  • We will conclude with Q&A regarding grading in Canvas.

You can participate from the comfort of your home or office. This is not a hands-on course, so there is no need for you to access Canvas before or during this overview. Simply attend and see how easy it is to use the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS) by Instructure to provide your students with their grades and monitor their performance.
