Interested in creating more dynamic slideshows online that will truly spark a group conversation among your course members? You can with VoiceThread! Learn in this online course how easy it is to use VoiceThread’s collaborative online platform to create and share multimedia slide shows with images, documents, and videos. With VoiceThread, participants can leave written, audio, or video comments as they navigate through your slideshow, and the VoiceThreads can be linked to or embedded into Canvas courses or shared publicly. In this course you will learn how to:

  • Navigate through a VoiceThread and the different user roles VoiceThread offers
  • Create a VoiceThread using PowerPoint presentations, images,videos, and other files
  • Edit your VoiceThread and its settings
  • Make comments on a VoiceThread
  • Share a VoiceThread and embed it into Canvas
This course will be held via a Canvas course as well as via VoiceThread’s website. This class is designed to be flexible and accommodate your schedule. There are deadlines for each day’s work to keep the group moving forward together, but participants may work on the assignments at any time of day or night, from any computer (PC or Mac) with an Internet connection and either Firefox, Safari, Chrome, or Internet Explorer.

Intro to Solid Waste Management @ Carbondale

Class Description

Did you ever wonder what happens to the stuff you throw away or recycle? This course, taught by Cathy Hall and Jed Miller of Pitkin County Landfill, introduces general concepts in landfill management, including: best practices in recycling and waste diversions for rural communities; proper disposal and identification of hazardous wastes; techniques in both green-waste and food-waste composting; and the economics of landfill operations. Whether you are an educator wishing to teach others about the science of solid waste management, a concerned citizen hoping to promote waste reduction in your home or workplace, or a policy-maker who wants to understand how integrated solid waste affects the budget and well-being of your community, this is the course for you. In addition to 9 hours of classroom instruction in Carbondale, Ms. Hall (MBA, SWANA) and Mr. Miller (SWANA, RCRA, DOT HazMat) will lead a 4-hour field trip to the Pitkin County Landfill on Saturday, Feb 8 (9a-1p). Meets Thursdays, 1/30-2/13. Cost: $49. Refund date: 1/28.

Canvas Kickstart Webinar

In this three hour workshop you will learn how to properly turn on and off your Mac, how to identify the external connections to the computer, how to use the mouse or track pad, and gain a better understanding of the Mac desktop including its menus, dock and status menu. You will learn how to adjust your sound volume and screen brightness, how and when to right click. You will learn about the apple menu, the finder, and system preferences. We will also explore creating, saving, copying, moving, deleting, finding, and transferring files. This will be followed by a brief introduction to some of the more popular applications for the Mac. Canvas: Gradebook and SpeedGrader

This course introduces participants to the Canvas Gradebook and SpeedGrader tools. This course assumes that participants already have some experience using Canvas, or have taken Canvas: Basics Online or another Canvas training. This session will take place completely online in the Canvas learning management system, at coloradomtn.instructure.com.

This training takes place over 4 days: it begins on Monday morning and ends Thursday evening. There are deadlines for each day’s work to keep the group moving forward together, but participants may work on the assignments at any time of day or night, from any computer (PC or Mac) with an Internet connection and either Firefox, Safari, Chrome, or Internet Explorer. This course will include:

  • clarifying the kinds of graded items that Canvas offers
  • opportunities to practice using the Canvas SpeedGrader to grade various kinds of assignments
  • opportunities to practice inputting grades, messaging students, and muting assignments in the Canvas Gradebook
  • practicing creating Assignment Groups and a weighted total
