Mac Laptop for Beginners II @ CMC in Aspen

If you have basic familiarity with your Mac laptop, including use of the Desktop, Finder, and System Preferences, dive more deeply into particular programs on your laptop. Explore iPhoto and iTunes, learn how to import photos and music and organize this content for easy playback. Get your iPhone and/or iPad into harmony with your laptop by learning how to select and synchronize content from your laptop to an iPhone and/or iPad. Students must bring their own Mac laptop and iPhone or iPad.

Learn how to make connections, network, plug in available jobs, and leverage targeted, online forums. Completion of the Social Media I and Social Media II workshops in January is highly recommended, but not required.

Canvas: Basics Online Spring Break Edition

Welcome to Canvas: Basics Online Spring Break Edition 2014!
This session will take place completely online in the Canvas learning management system, at It will take place over 4 days: it begins on Monday morning, March 10, and ends Thursday, March 13.

New for the Spring Break Edition: optional daily web conference! Join the instructor to talk about Canvas, review topics, ask questions, and get help with the course. (Times to be determined.)
There are deadlines for each day’s work to keep the group moving forward together, but participants may work on the assignments at any time of day or night, from any computer (PC or Mac) with an Internet connection and either Firefox, Safari, Chrome, or Internet Explorer. In Canvas: Basics Online we will cover how to:

  • Log into Canvas
  • Modify your profile and Notifications in Canvas
  • Make your course “published” so that students can see it
  • Create an announcement
  • Create Pages and add text, videos, and links to the course’s Pages
  • Create a Discussion
  • Work with modules
  • Create Assignments
  • And more!

In addition to these tasks, the group will also be communicating via the course discussions. Participants will be engaging with Canvas as students and will carry out some of the assigned tasks in the Canvas course for this training. However, some of the tasks must be done outside of this training’s course, in a “sandbox” course where the participant has an instructor role. This “sandbox” course will be provided for course participants. This training concludes with a final quiz on Canvas topics.

CMC Online Course Design Guidelines Webinar

Join Karen Kaemmerling, Instructional Chair for Online Learning, for a detailed look at online course design standards established by the Online Course Quality Task force. Explore Quality Matters design expectations and how they are incorporated in the CMC Online Course Design Checklist. Developing and delivering a great online course is a challenge with constantly evolving technology and industry standards, so the Online Course Quality Task Force worked hard in Fall 2013 to establish a set of standards and best practices to ensure CMC online courses are consistently high-quality learning environments that facilitate active learning and a positive learning and teaching environment.
