Medival Literature & Culture – Part 2 @ Carbondale
Mar 20 @ 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm
Class Description

Immerse yourself in the literature of the Anglo-Saxons, a migratory, Germanic people caught between two worlds in the land of middle-earth: their ancestral homeland on the North Sea and the green isle of Britain. Explore the boundaries between strength and frailty, allegiance and honor and the isolation of exile: the fleeting transience of a short life and the hope of eternal rest: the fellowship of kinfolk and the bitterness of blood-feuds: the rise of usurpers and the fall of virtuous retainers. Experience epic poetry, elegis, riddles, sacred texts and historical prose while contemplating the identity of a civilized people that lived over a thousand years ago. This course will be offered twice, once from 2/20-3/6 and again from 3/20-4/10. Different texts will be read in each course, so students can take either course or both. Meets Thursdays, 3/20-4/10. Cost: $118. Refund date: 3/18.
