A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum artwork‘A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum’ opens April 4 at CMC Theatre

The Colorado Mountain College Theatre 2013-14 season is set to end on a high note with the crowd-pleasing musical comedy “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.”

A playful spin on the classic Vaudeville opening line, “A funny thing happened on the way to the theater,” this raucous musical follows the escapades of a Roman slave, Pseudolus, as he desperately seeks citizenship. Misplaced affections, mistaken identities and mixed motives drive a zany cast of characters into absurd mishaps that result in sublime comedy.

Stephen Sondheim composed the music and lyrics, with Bert Shevelove and Larry Gelbart as librettists. The original cast starred Zero Mostel and opened on Broadway in 1962. The show has enjoyed two revivals, including the Tony-winning 1996 production that earned Nathan Lane a “Best Actor in a Musical” award.

CMC Theatre’s production of “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” is directed by Gary Ketzenbarger and stars CMC Theatre adjunct instructor Brad Moore as Pseudolus. Performances are April 4-5 and 10-12 at 7 p.m., with matinees April 6 and 13 at 2 p.m., in the New Space Theatre at Colorado Mountain College in Spring Valley. Viewers are cautioned that the show contains bawdy humor that may not be appropriate for young children.

Tickets can be reserved now at svticketsales@coloradomtn.edu or 947-8177. Admission to “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” is $20 for adults and $15 for students, seniors, staff and faculty.
