Canvas: Basics Online
Aug 18 – Aug 21 all-day

Welcome to Canvas: Basics Online.
This session will take place completely online in the Canvas learning management system, at coloradomtn.instructure.com. It will take place over 4 days: it begins on Monday morning and ends Thursday evening.

There are deadlines for each day’s work to keep the group moving forward together, but participants may work on the assignments at any time of day or night, from any computer (PC or Mac) with an Internet connection and either Firefox, Safari, Chrome, or Internet Explorer. In Canvas: Basics Online we will cover:

  • How to modify your profile and the Notifications Canvas sends you
  • How to make your course “published” so that students can see it
  • How to work with Draft State and make items in your course invisible or visible to students by “publishing” and “unpublishing” them
  • How to work with Canvas’ Rich Text Editor to build content in your course, such as Pages, Announcements, Discussions, Assignments
  • How to add text, videos, and links to the course
  • How to work with modules to organize course materials
  • Guidance to comply with Online Learning’s new standards for fully online courses
  • Course copying tips for the future
  • And more!

In addition to these tasks, the group will also be communicating via the course discussions. Participants will be engaging with Canvas as students and will carry out some of the assigned tasks in the Canvas course for this training. However, some of the tasks must be done outside of this training’s course, in a “sandbox” course where the participant has an instructor role. This “sandbox” course will be provided for course participants. This training concludes with a final quiz on Canvas topics. Questions about these courses? Please contact the instructor.

What’s New with Draft State @ Glenwood Center, Room 106
Aug 19 @ 4:30 pm – 6:00 pm

Haven’t used Canvas lately? Or new to Canvas? Please make sure you are aware of the important changes in the interface so you can hit the ground running this fall!
Draft State allows an instructor to make Assignments, Quizzes, Modules, Pages, and Discussions “unpublished” i.e., invisible to students and exclude them from grade calculations.  With Draft State, instructors have more control over when students are able to view the content of a Canvas course.  In this 1.5 hour session we will cover the following:

  • How Draft State interacts with Modules, Pages, Assignments, Discussions, and Quizzes
  • Setting up your course’s homepage with Draft State
  • What happens in regards to Draft State when you copy courses
  • What students will and won’t see as you work with Draft State
  • How to look at your Canvas course from the student perspective

This workshop is part of the Roaring Fork Campus In-Service event the week of August 18, 2014.

Canvas: Creating Personal Connections @ Glenwood Center, Room 105
Aug 20 @ 6:30 pm – 7:30 pm

Cyberspace can be a lonely place. Join us for this hands-on workshop and see how you can add a personal touch to your online Canvas course area. Whether you teach fully online or use Canvas as a component of your face-to-face course, you can use these tips to help make your Canvas area more personal and inviting. We’ll briefly show you several ways you can create personal connections, and give you more information on each if you’d like to implement these touches into your course.

  • Give students an Icebreaker forum or activity to get to know each other
  • Create a PPT banner for the home page with a photo of everyone so when they enter the course they see themselves represented
  • Add Jing (screen capture) videos to show people how to navigate or use an interface
  • Use the Canvas video / audio tool to add yourself to Canvas pages, forums, feedback
  • Have a look at Vincent Tinto’s diagram and see what a major role personal connections have in a student’s decision to stay in school
