Avalanche Awareness Level II @ CMC in Spring Valley

Class Description:

Enhances students’ understanding of snow and avalanche phenomena, hazard evaluation, rescue, avalanche forecasting, and avalanche hazard mitigation. This course will be taught to the Level 2 standards as recognized by the National Ski Patrol (NSP) or American Avalanche Association (AAA) or American Institute for Avalanche Research and Education (AIARE) requirements. Students must be at least 18 years of age on the first day of class to take this course.

This course is designed for the backcountry team leader, an introductory professional ski patrol or ski guide. Topics covered include: the SWAG module, standardized observations, recording guidelines, advanced understanding of mountain snowpack, advanced rescue skills, improved decision making, stability factors/checklist and other stability evaluation tools, snow stability evaluation to hazard/risk management model, professional observation skills. Students that complete this course will gain an AIARE II certification. This course meets Wednesday nights from 6-8:50pm on 2/22 and 3/1. Field days are 2/25, 2/26, 3/4 and 3/5. Course prerequisite is OUT 168. The $163 non-refundable course fee is for travel/supplies associated with the course.

Desert Orientation @ CMC in Spring Valley

Class Description:

A concentrated field experience in a desert environment is provided in this course. Emphasis is on procedures for group travel and camping, ecology, geography, and safety.

This backpacking-based class explores the spectacular Sonoran Desert environment south of Phoenix. It will take place in the North Maricopa Wilderness Area, Arizona, from March 9-14. There are two mandatory pre-meetings on 2/24 and 3/3 from 1-2:50pm. The supplemental course charge includes most meals (17), transportation, campground fees, and group equipment. Tent, sleeping bag and backpack rentals are available. The supplemental charge ($366) is nonrefundable.
