How to Learn Another Language from a Native Speaker or Friend @ CMC in Glenwood Springs

Class Description

Ever take a language class and not learn to speak? You aren’t alone. The goal of this class is to provide tools to enable you to work productively with a speaker of a language outside the classroom. The first three weeks you will join with other students in the Lakota class to experience this approach first-hand. The final two weeks a Spanish speaker will be available so you can practice guiding the speaker to help you speak his or her language. You may also invite a friend or other language speaker to the class for the final two weeks so you can practice the approach together. Students may try out the first session (May 26) for free – it is necessary to register for the free session as room capacity is limited.

Want to learn a Native American language? This short course will give you a chance to begin speaking Lakota. Since you already speak one language, this new language will be considerably easier…if you are willing to speak the new language rather than learn about it. English translations will not be used in the teaching. Bernice Catches, native Lakota speaker, has taught Lakota for many years and participated in training Native speakers around the country in this active language teaching approach.
