Fire Academy I & II at Colorado Mountain College

The CMC Fire Academy is your gateway to becoming certified Firefighter in Colorado

Graduates of the Fire Academy I are prepared to take the Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control State Firefighter I and Hazardous Materials Operations examinations.

The Fire Academy II program is designed to advance fire fighters to the next level in the fire service. Students will learn new skills at the Firefighter II and Hazardous Materials Technician levels.

Fire Academy I

This certificate program prepares students for the entry level in the fire service. Students learn the fundemental skills necessary to respond to emergencies in their communities. These include medical, fire-related, and hazardous materials incidents. The Fire Academy I consists of two college-level credit classes:

  • FST-100 Firefighter I – 9 credit hours
  • FST-107 Hazardous Materials Operations – 3 credit hours

Academy classes are offered at our Edwards and Leadville campuses. Much of the hands-on training occurs at our training and live fire burn facility in Dotsero. Our instructors are a diverse group of professional active and retired firefighters from agencies throughout the region.

This curriculum includes classes included in the Associate of Applied Science Degree in Fire Science Technology and credits may be applied toward that degree. Graduates of the program will receive a Certificate of Occupational Proficiency in Fire Academy I.

Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control Certification

The CMC Fire Academy I meets and exceeds all classroom, practical and live fire training requirements for students to sit for the Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control State Firefighter I and Hazardous Materials Operations written and practical examinations.

These examinations are separate from Colorado Mountain College. They are not required to complete the college course, but are required to become certified by the State of Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control.

Fire Academy II

This certificate program is intended to advance fire fighters to the next level in the fire service. Students will learn new skills at the Fire Fighter II and Hazardous Materials Technician levels.

The curriculum includes classes included in the Associate of Applied Science degree in Fire Science Technology and credits may be applied toward that degree. Graduates of the program will receive a Certificate of Occupational Proficiency in Fire Academy II.

Affordable Tuition

Colorado Mountain College offers one of the most affordable fire academies in Colorado. In-District tuition rates are $62.00 per credit hour. The in-state rate is $127.00 per credit hour. Out-of-state tuition is $429.00. For more information, see Tuition & Costs.
