Phlebotomy: In-demand Skills in Health Care

Healthcare phlebotomy professionals draw blood from patients and prepare it for further medical testing

Learn the responsibilities and practices of venipuncture, capillary puncture and special collection procedures. You'll gain hands-on experience with quality control, infection control and safety procedures as well as laboratory computer systems. The health care industry is projected keep its current fast rate of growth creating high demand for specialized job skills.

Internships and RPT Certification

Course work, including labs, is followed by an internship to further develop skills and confidence. After successfully completing Colorado Mountain College's phlebotomy program, students will be able to apply for a National Phlebotomy Registry Examination. Permission of Program Coordinator is required, and current Medical Assistants are encouraged to apply. Documentation of immunizations, criminal background check and permission of instructor are also required.

All phlebotomy students must successfully pass a mandatory background check and drug screen in order to participate and be placed in a clinical setting.

Students must demonstrate college-level proficiency in reading, writing, and mathematics as prerequisites for courses within this program. Skills in these areas may affect the sequence of courses in which students can enroll and may also extend the time required to complete this program. For more details, please see Placement Testing.
