Glenwood Springs – Spring Valley Campus Outdoor Education Fall 2013 Classes

Wilderness and the American Ethic, HUM-137
This class includes two mandatory field days (9/14 & 10/4). One outing requires moderate non-technical backcountry hiking. Students should plan on walking up to three miles on trails in the mountains. The supplemental course charge includes subscription to a current events reader, entrance fee to the Maroon Bells, and transportation on the 10/4 outing. The supplemental course charge is non-refundable.
Wilderness First Responder, HWE-129
This class will be taught to the guidelines of the Wilderness Medicine Society. Field meeting dates will emphasize practical skills in backcountry settings and will take place in the classroom and outdoors. Field days are mandatory on Saturday and Sunday, 10/5 & 10/6, and 10/26 & 10/27. The 10/26 meeting includes a night triage activity. Upon successful completion of this class, students will be awarded certifications from the American Heart Association (CPR) and Desert Mountain Medicine (WFR). Certification is active for two years. The supplemental course charge includes textbook, expendable supplies, and certification fees. The supplemental course charge is non-refundable. Minimum age 17.
Wilderness First Responder Refresher, HWE-130
Students must drop this class by 11/13 to receive a refund of the tuition. Field meeting dates will take place in the classroom and outdoors. Certificates are sponsored by Desert Mountain Medicine (WFR) and the American Heart Association (CPR) and are active for two years. The supplemental course charge includes textbook, expendable materials, and certification fees. The supplemental course charge is nonrefundable. Minimum age 17.
 
Mountain Orientation, OUT-112
Group meets at Spring Valley Summit Student Center at 8:00am on Thursday 8/15. Backcountry field trip is Thursday through the following Tuesday, 8/15 – 8/20. An equipment list and additional information will be emailed to students. There will be a final exam on 8/30 from 8:30am – 9:20am. The supplemental course charge includes transportation, breakfasts and dinners, group camping equipment, access and campground fees. Backpack, sleeping bag, and tent rentals are available. The supplemental course charge is nonrefundable. Minimum age 17.
Canyon Orientation, OUT-114
This is a 5-day, car camping based, overnight field trip to Comb Ridge and Butler Wash, Utah. Students are expected to participate in long day hikes each day. Class will meet for four Fridays before the field trip, including 8/30, 9/13, 9/27, & 10/11. Field trip is Wednesday-Sunday, 10/16 – 10/20. Final exam is on 10/25. Food is not provided. The supplemental course charge includes transportation, group equipment, showers, and access fees. Backpack, sleeping bag, and tent rentals available. The supplemental course charge is nonrefundable. Minimum age 17.
River Orientation, OUT-116
This class will explore the Colorado River in the Glenwood Springs and Grand Junction areas. This class includes one classroom and two field day trips 9/6, 9/7, and 9/8 and a three-day overnight field trip 9/20 – 9/22 on the Colorado river through Ruby – Horsethief Canyons. The supplemental course charge includes rafts, life jackets, personal dry bags and related equipment, transportation, shuttle fees, access fees, breakfasts and dinners on the overnight trip. Students will receive partial credit hours toward Colorado River guide certification. Instructors are guide instructors in Colorado and Utah. The supplemental course charge is non-refundable. Minimum age 17.
Orienteering, OUT-102
This class will focus on map reading and compass use skills in a variety of mountainous terrain. Students will need a compass by the second class. Class will not meet on 9/6, 9/20, 10/4, & 10/18. The supplemental course charge covers the cost of a map. The supplemental charge is nonrefundable.
Rock Climbing I, OUT-131
This class has mandatory meetings at the Spring Valley Climbing Wall from 4 – 6pm, 8/28, 9/4 and 9/11. Three field trips are included. One overnight: 8/30, 5pm departure – returning 9/2, 6pm, and two 1-day trips 9/14 and 9/15. Supplemental course charge includes access fee, three dinners, three breakfasts, campground fees, transportation, group camping equipment and climbing gear. The supplemental charge is non-refundable. Minimum Age17.
Rock Climbing II, OUT-132
This class has mandatory meetings at the Spring Valley Climbing Wall from 4 – 6pm, 9/25, 10/2, and 10/9. Two overnight field trips are included: 9/27, 5pm departure – returning 9/29, 6pm, and 10/11 – 10/13, 7:30am – 6pm. Supplemental course charge includes access fee, four dinners, four breakfasts, campground fees, transportation, group camping equipment and climbing gear. The supplemental course charge is non-refundable. Minimum Age 17.
Level I Avalanche Safety, OUT-168
This class will be taught to the curriculum standards of the American Institute of Avalanche Research and Education (AIARE). The class includes two weekend field days which will take place in the classroom and the field (12/7 & 12/8). The field outings will cover up to five miles. The supplemental course charge includes access fee, required texts, transportation, and AIARE Certificate. Class materials, avalanche beacons, probes, and shovels are provided. Students may use their own beacons provided they meet the instructor’s approval. Students must ski or snowboard at an intermediate level or receive instructor consent. The supplemental course charge is non-refundable. Minimum age 17.
Backcountry Cooking, OUT-144
This class consists of practical cooking sessions at each class meeting. Learn to make gourmet backcountry meals from scratch such as quiche, pizza, cakes, and cinnamon rolls. This class will cover cookware, nutrition, planning, preparing and packing for tasty expedition-type foods. Group cookware is provided. Class meets at the Outdoor Ed Shed. The supplemental course charge covers food and is non-refundable.
Leadership Development, PSY-211
Text required. The supplemental course charge includes two team-building sessions, and is nonrefundable.
