Water in Outdoor Education Studies at Alpine Campus
The Yampa River flows through downtown Steamboat. We have a variety of courses that give you the chance to get out and learn about rivers.
River Orientation (OUT118)
We have two sections of River Orientation. One section focuses on canoe techniques and one focuses on rafting techniques. The time spent in both sections can be used for hours toward your Colorado River Guide Certification. These courses expose you to reading the water, navigating rapids, and safety techniques. They also incorporate group planning, meals, and dynamics on the river.
Introduces you to the fundamentals of river kayaking on the Yampa River. These skills include reading the water, paddling strokes and techniques, river safety, rescue and self-rescue techniques, and an introduction to kayak rolling.
Canoeing (PED186 & 187)
You will learn canoeing techniques for both tandem and solo boating in these courses. Skills include reading the water, safety techniques, proper gear and clothing, Leave No Trace principles, and boating ethics on the Colorado river.
