Faculty for Solar Energy Courses at Colorado Mountain College

CMC faculty member Bill Sepmeier currently designs and integrates off-grid solar and hybrid power systems for communications facilities from large VSAT installations to WiFi hotspots, specializing in sites that require minimal to no generator backup power.  He also designs custom solar domestic hot water systems and solar radiant heating systems upon request.

  • Cited in US Patent 6415329 – Method and apparatus for improving efficiency of TCP/IP protocol over high delay – bandwidth network as well as United States Patent 6411616 and US Patent 6101180 – High bandwidth broadcast system having localized multicast access to broadcast content, all based in part on my work and public domain white papers published during the 1990’s.
  • Developed the first satellite SCADA network for broadcasting operations (the National Supervisory Network, 1988), implemented the first (and over 150 more) MPEG localized digital satellite radio networks (NSN Network Services, 1993), designed and implemented the world’s first commercial international satellite Internet services (NSN,1995, with InfoMail, Uganda) and helped define and develop improved satellite Internet TCP/IP transmission standards (IETF, 1996). NSN is now “Clear Channel Satellite.”
  • Over 30 years of involvement in solar, wind, microhydro and other renewable / co-gen distributed power systems.

Domestic and International Experience

Bill began working in renewable energy in 1978, refurbishing several old wind turbines purchased at auction in Georgia and selling them to several neighbors. Working for a division of Rocky Mountain Gas Company in 1986, Bill replaced a wind-power system at the top of Mosquito Peak, east of Leadville at 14,750 feet elevation, with a solar PV power system. It’s still in place and powering the microwave and radio relay site at the top of the continental divide.

He re-engaged with the industry full time in 2005, designing self-contained off-grid communications site power systems used in Sierra Leone, Iraq, Afghanistan, across Australia and in other locations around the world. Bill recently completed a solar powered micro-cell relay site for a homeowner in rural Garfield County.

Bill’s Sweetwater Creek office and home are powered with local onsite-produced solar and microhydro energy and also uses active and passive solar heating. The financial investment in solar and hydro systems on-site provides a 7.5% return on capital and prevents over 17,000 pounds of carbon emission annually.
