Dr. Alan G. Walker was President of Upper Iowa University from 2004 -2012*.  Founded in 1857, Upper Iowa University is a private, independent, not-for-profit university providing undergraduate and graduate degree programs and leadership development opportunities to approximately 6,000 students. Upper Iowa University is composed of a traditional campus as well as a significant academic extension enterprise which includes centers worldwide, and is a recognized innovator in offering accredited, quality programs through flexible, multiple delivery systems, including online and independent study. (*On sabbatical for the 2012-2013 academic year.)

Dr. Walker has over thirty years of administrative and leadership experience in postsecondary and higher education.  His experience as the chief executive officer for Upper Iowa University and in progressively responsible administrative positions at three comprehensive, Carnegie research extensive universities includes the following:

  • Personnel management and staff development
  • Project and cost accounting-based budgeting
  • Legislative affairs
  • Teaching and scholarship
  • Local and regional economic development
  • Emergency management: mitigation, preparedness, response, recovery, education
  • Athletic program administration
  • Strategic alliance and coalition building
  • Leadership and management of academic extension programs and systems to adult learners
  • Specialized/program and regional/institutional accreditation
  • Competency-based curriculum development and evaluation (including the use of instructional software) 
  • Grant acquisition, management and fundraising
  • Administrative experience in university system operating environments
  • Distance learning and outreach program delivery design and management
  • Strategic short and long-range planning
  • Policy development
  • International programs, including oversight of centers located overseas

Dr. Walker has held key leadership positions in international professional associations and has been an international consultant and guest lecturer. He has also been an adjunct faculty member at the University of Kansas, Louisiana State University-Eunice, Arkansas Technical University and at Western Michigan University, were he held Associate Graduate Faculty status.  Dr. Walker served as a member of the Board of Visitors for the Emergency Management Institute at the Federal Emergency Management Agency from 1999 to 2002, and served on an advisory board for the School of Public Health at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill from 2004 – 2006, as well as numerous other boards and committees.

Dr. Walker has authored and presented numerous trade journal articles and papers. During his distinguished career, he has also received many awards, recognitions, and honors to include the International Inaugural Visiting Fellowship to the Fire Service College in England in 1995 and membership in Phi Kappa Phi, an academic honor society.  He holds degrees in Fire Science (AS), College of Southern Idaho, Trade and Industrial Technical Education (BS), University of Idaho, Adult/Vocational Education (MEd), University of Idaho, and Higher Education Policy and Administration (PhD), University of Kansas.
