Outdoor classes at Colorado Mountain College in Carbondale & Glenwood Springs

Kayaking (1 credit)
Monday, 5:30-9:30pm, July 8

This class consists of a pre-field meeting at Alpine Quest Sports (7/8), two pool sessions at the Glenwood Springs Community Center pool (7/10 and 7/17), and two all-day river sessions (7/14 and 7/21). Pool classes meet promptly at 5:30pm. The nonrefundable supplemental course charge includes pool and river access fees. Equipment rentals are available and students will pay Alpine Quest Sports at the first class meeting. Students who own their own kayak gear should bring it to the first class meeting (7/8) for the instructor to check for suitability. Minimum age: 17. Cost: one credit of tuition plus $30 charge.
Ski Mountaineering (1 credit)
Thursday, 6-8:30pm, May 23 at Spring Valley
Field trip: June 1-2
This is a rigorous field activity class with substantial snow travel, including climbing and descents. Previous snow travel experience is highly recommended for this class. The class includes a two-day, one-night outing with a campground stay. There is a mandatory pre-field trip meeting at Spring Valley on 5/23. Students are responsible for providing their own food, and alpine touring or telemark skis with climbing skins, or snowboard and snowshoes. The nonrefundable supplemental course charge includes transportation, campground and access fees. Minimum age 17. Cost: one credit of tuition plus $47.50 charge.
Swift Water Rescue Technician I (1 credit)
Friday/Saturday/Sunday, 8am-6:30pm, May 10-12.
This class will be taught to the guidelines of the American Canoe Association (ACA) Level 4: Swiftwater Rescue curriculum. The instructor will contact students with equipment information. This is a physically demanding class where students will be in the river frequently. Students must be able to independently participate in skills training and activities in the class. First class meets at the Glenwood Center. The nonrefundable supplemental course charge includes transportation, access fee, printing, and textbook. Minimum age 17.Cost: one credit of tuition plus $76.50 charge.
Fun With Llamas
Saturdays, 10am-noon, June 6-29, Glenwood Springs.
Learn all about llamas, both in the classroom and hands-on with the animals. First class meets at the Glenwood Center and is a general overview/introduction where you learn the history of llamas and alpacas as well as the difference between the two camelids; what they eat; basic medical care, and how these animals are trained. The remaining classes meet at Llama Linda Ranch where each student is assigned a llama to work with on training, grooming and hiking. The last class is an actual hike with the llamas. Cost: $49.
Golf Clinic
Thursdays, 6-8pm, 6/6-6/27 or 7/11-8/1.
This CMC golf clinic is hosted by Lakota Canyon Ranch in New Castle. This course, available to all ability levels, covers the fundamentals of the golf swing (including grip, stance, posture and correct swing), chipping and pitching, putting and driving. The course culminates with a nine-hole playing lesson. The course fee covers eight hours of instruction and use of the golf course. Students are responsible for their own equipment (limited rentals are available; call 984-9700 to inquire). Students must wear proper golf attire (no cut-off shorts or jeans). Register in advance at CMC. Cost: $109.
Beginning Roadcycling
Wednesdays, 8:30-10:30am, June 12-July 24, Glenwood Springs
Improve your fitness while discovering beautiful scenery along the back roads and bike paths in the Roaring Fork Valley. Personal trainer, fitness instructor, and avid cyclist Tom Moher teaches you about the mechanics and more comfortable riding techniques, riding safety, etiquette and fuel/hydration on your bike. Students need their own bicycle, helmet, riding apparel, water bottle, wind/rain jacket and tire repair kit with spare tube. First class meets at the Glenwood Center. Be prepared to ride, make new friends and learn all the best rides around. No class July 3. Cost: $71.
Bike Maintenance Series
Wednesdays, 5-6:30pm, Glenwood Springs
Join bike racer and professional bike mechanic, Darin Binion, to learn how to care for your road or mountain bike. Register for Syn #74411 and get all five summer bike maintenance workshops for $80. This price gives you one workshop for free (and more). Or, register for each individual workshop of interest below. Please bring your bike to class. An optional text is available from the instructor.

Bike Anatomy This workshop focuses on how to identify and then clean all the important components of your bike as well as to provide overview of entire bike maintenance series. Bring your bikes to class. Cost: $23.
Flat Repair This workshop focuses on tire repair and selecting the best tires for the terrain you want to ride. Bring your bikes to class. Cost: $23.
Bike Drive Train This workshop focuses on your bike’s drive train. Learn to make your bike shift like butter! Bring your bikes to class. Cost: $23.
Wheels This workshop focuses on your bike’s wheels. Learn to keep them spinning straight! Bring your bike to class. Cost: $23.
Brakes This workshop focuses on your bike’s brakes. Learn how to adjust your brakes and learn to stop correctly. Bring your bike to class. This class meets 6-7:30pm. Cost: $23.
