Associate Professor Steven G. Smith joined the professional photography faculty at Colorado Mountain College in 2009. Smith's photography background includes over twenty years of experience working as a professional photographer. Most recently, Steve owned and operated his own business serving editorial and commercial clients. Steve previously worked as a staff photographer for E.W. Scripps newspapers. Including The Rocky Mountain News, The Commercial Appeal and The Albuquerque Tribune.
Published around the world in a wide variety of publications and Web sites, including: New York Times magazine, ESPN The Magazine, Smithsonian magazine, Time magazine, National Geographic, Geo magazine, and Public Broadcasting Service PBS, etc).
His photography, multimedia, and picture editing work has been recognized by his peers and awarded over 100 professional awards from organizations such as the Pulitzer Prize (shared award), Pictures of the Year International, Communication Arts, National Endowment for the Arts, NPPA’s The Best of Photojournalism, the Society of News Design, Sasakawa Sports Foundation World Sports Photo Contest, and the Online News Association.
His work has been shown in a wide variety of world-class museums and institutions including: the Smithsonian Institute, the International Professional Photography Hall of Fame, the Science Museum, (South Kensington, London, England), and Kanagawa Prefecture, (Japan), the National Wildlife Museum, etc.
Steve began to turn some of his attention to teaching in 1997 and has taught a wide variety of courses/lectures for colleges and workshops around the country. His teaching style focuses on blending the technical with the aesthetic side of visual communication.
