Colorado Mountain College Board of Overseers
Distinguished, diverse group collaborates to guide CMC to further excellence
The Colorado Mountain College Board of Overseers is a group of voluntary advisors with distinguished and diverse backgrounds. While the Board of Overseers has and seeks no formal authority, each member is nominated and selected based on his and her ability to offer counsel, generate ideas, and extend influence, connections, strategic thinking, resources, and passion to support the college and its president.
This advisory board meets annually in person, somewhere within the CMC service area, and occasionally by conference call. Periodic meetings with the CMC president may also be arranged as needed and desired.
Former Colorado Mountain College Foundation Board Member and Carbondale philanthropist Jim Calaway founded the CMC Board of Overseers in 2012. His vision was to launch and sustain a selective group of advisors who care about and support CMC’s mission, and to establish a thought-provoking, dynamic forum to help guide the college to further excellence.
Enis Alldredge Jr
Enis Alldredge Jr.
Enis Alldredge Jr. is a retired senior vice president at the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City. During the last 20 years of his career, he led the payments system division and was responsible for payment activities in the seven-state 10th Federal Reserve District. Prior to his last assignment, he was the managing officer of the Denver office of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City.
During his career, he participated in many Federal Reserve system activities, including being chosen to lecture to managers at the People’s Bank of China. As a member of the bank’s management committee, he interacted with many private sector directors from a wide range of industries and occupations during his career.
Enis is a graduate of the University of Nebraska and the Graduate School of Banking at the University of Wisconsin. He also completed the Executive Program in Organizational Change at Stanford University. Before joining the Federal Reserve, he completed five years as an officer in the U.S. Army, including an assignment in Korea. In Kansas City, he served as president of Inroads, Inc., a minority development organization, and served on its national board. He also served as president of the American Institute of Banking.
Since his move to the Roaring Fork Valley, Enis has served both as president of the Aspen Glen Homeowners Association and chairman of the Aspen Glen Club. He is also a member of the Sunset Rotary Club. Enis is an admirer of Colorado Mountain College and has taken several of its noncredit courses.
Vice president, public programs and executive director, Aspen Ideas Festival, Kitty Boone is responsible for oversight of a broad array of public facing programs and events at the Aspen Institute.
She is the primary executive in charge of the Aspen Ideas Festival, a week-long conference that is hosted by the Institute and The Atlantic magazine each summer in Aspen, and also supports and works with colleagues on numerous additional programs which the Institute partners in or manages, including Spotlight Health, Aspen Abu Dhabi Ideas Forum, City Lab, Vanity Fair New Establishment Summit, and various smaller initiatives. Kitty has worked at the Aspen Institute since 2003.
Prior to joining the Aspen Institute, where she also had responsibilities for seminar programs, Kitty served as vice president, marketing and sales at Aspen Skiing Company, where she worked for 11 years.
A native of San Francisco and a graduate of Stanford University, Kitty began her career in Washington, D.C., as an intern for a national environmental group, ultimately coming to Aspen in 1989, after stints in the public and private sector and earning her master’s in public and private management at Yale School of Management. She is the proud mom of college-bound twins, sits on two boards in Aspen, and is passionate about education.
Dorothy “Doe” Browning is a Vail-based philanthropist and active supporter of Colorado Mountain College. Doe served on the CMC Foundation board from 2011 until early 2017. She is currently a board member of the Town of Vail’s Art in Public Places program where she has served as chairman of the executive committee since 2006. She is also the social committee co-chairman of the Vail Valley Foundation.
In addition, Doe’s philanthropic efforts extend far beyond Colorado. In Washington, D.C., Doe serves on the Corcoran Women’s Committee at the Corcoran Museum of Art, where she focuses her efforts on long-range planning, special events implementation, and membership orientation. In Kentucky, through the Tom Browning Boys’ and Girls’ Club, she founded and is the manager of the WinMax Foundation, which generates funds for tutoring students in first through 12th grades in Mason County’s public and private schools. In Cincinnati, Ohio, she is an officer and a member of the board of directors of the Pulley Foundation, which funds the arts and education.
Doe has an extensive background serving a number of community and cultural organizations. She was a charter member of the Architectural Review Board in Maysville, Ky., the Hospice of Hope in Mason County and the Maysville Re-Leaf Board, involved in landscape planning and review. Also in Maysville, she served on the board of directors of the Episcopal Day School and Episcopal Church Vestry at the Church of the Nativity.
Doe has been involved in numerous real estate redevelopment projects and partnerships, from work with Dominey Designs in Orleans, Mass. to The Devine Corporation in Maysville, Ky. to Moore Lighting and Design in Philadelphia, and in Vail, with Pan Eagle, LLC and Decked, LLC.
A graduate of the Philadelphia College of Art, now The University of the Arts, she double majored in metals and ceramics, receiving a bachelor’s of fine arts degree in 1982. Her work is marketed and collected internationally through Dorothy Browning Ceramics, where she produces one-of-a-kind ceramics.
Paul D. Bushong Jr. is an advocate of education and a longtime resident of the Roaring Fork Valley. A retired petroleum engineer, he moved to Carbondale from Houston, Texas. Lately, he has devoted his time to promoting the education of the valley’s students. In 2014 he established the Fast Forward Scholarship to support local students seeking a certificate or two-year degree. Since its inception, the Fast Forward Scholarship program has enabled dozens of area students to become certified as medical assistants, cosmetologists, and auto mechanics, among other skilled trades.
Administered by the Aspen Community Foundation, the scholarship is intended to help those who might “fall through the cracks” and are not working toward a four-year degree. He recently started a new scholarship, administered through the CMC Foundation, that can include candidates who have been out of high school for a number of years. Applications can be accepted and awards made any time during the year rather than by a specific deadline once a year.
Paul also sponsors an annual 12-day study tour to the New Orleans WW II Museum and the battlefields of Normandy, France, for 12 high school sophomores and juniors. A Korean War veteran, he is passionate about teaching kids the history of America’s role in world affairs. The local community benefits through a requirement that the students present what they’ve learned to other classes and local groups.

Jim Calaway is a philanthropist and businessman who resides in Carbondale, Colo. He served as the chair of the Aspen Institute’s Society of Fellows before he became a trustee in 1997. In 2000, he was selected as a lifetime trustee. He now serves as chairman of the Lifetime Trustees of the Aspen Institute. Jim was in the oil and gas exploration business for more than 40 years and retired as chairman of Edge Petroleum in the late 1980s. He now partners with his sons in building wind farms in several states to generate renewable energy. He and his sons are also principals in producing lithium in Argentina.
Since his retirement, Jim has set his sights on philanthropy and fundraising for civic groups and nonprofit organizations both locally in Colorado’s Roaring Fork Valley and nationwide. He served as a regent of the University of Corpus Christi, a trustee of Antioch College, and a board member of the Colorado Mountain College Foundation. At Colorado Mountain College in Glenwood Springs-Spring Valley, the James C. and Connie L. Calaway Academic Building, which houses a theater and a number of classrooms, is a testament to the Calaways and their dedication to and support of CMC (Connie chaired the CMC Foundation from 1999 to 2002). In 2012, Jim founded and currently serves on the Colorado Mountain College Board of Overseers, a volunteer board of advisors to the college’s president.
Jim served as treasurer for the American Civil Liberties Union on the national level and is a lifetime member of the NAACP. He co-founded the Colorado Animal Rescue (CARE) shelter that has taken in, cared for, and adopted out more than 12,000 homeless dogs and cats. Jim received two presidential appointments during the Carter administration to the National Petroleum Council and as Commissioner of Presidential Scholars.
David Chase’s career path has followed multiple areas of interest, the most important of which has been private equity investing. Beginning in 1985 and continuing through 2014 David was the managing partner for a pledge fund and a fully funded partnership. The focus was on understandable small and medium-sized manufacturing and service businesses. A byproduct of this activity has been David’s involvement as a trustee of Thornburg Investment Trust and Thornburg Mutual Funds (2000-present). Additionally David helped to form two community banks, one in Flagstaff, Ariz., and one in Santa Fe, N.M.
Prior to entering the investment world, David earned his M.B.A. from the Amos Tuck School at Dartmouth College and then joined the faculty of the College of Business at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff teaching finance related courses at the undergraduate and M.B.A. level. During that period he also earned his Ph.D. in finance from Arizona State University.
An overarching interest has been registered and commercial cattle ranching. From the early 1960s until 1997 the Chases were very involved in a family ranching enterprise located in Hillside and Flagstaff, Ariz. This activity informed their lives in many ways, instilling a strong ethic of self-reliance and determination and an abiding love of the land.
David and his wife Katherin participate in and support a variety of cultural, educational, scientific and environmental nonprofit organizations in communities where they have lived and worked. They currently live in Old Snowmass, Colorado.
Doris Dewton was first elected to the CMC Board of Trustees in 2001 and was re-elected to a second term in 2005. She was board president from 2005 to 2009, and served the college on the CMC Foundation board from 2009 until June, 2016.
While serving as a Colorado Mountain College Trustee, she also participated nationally in the Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT), where she served one year on the its board as director-at-large, and was also the association’s state chair for Colorado for several years.
Closer to her home in Edwards, Doris has been active in her local community for the last 21 years. Besides working for the Beaver Creek Ski School part-time for the past 18 winters, she has accepted leadership roles with the Singletree Property Owner’s Association, the Berry Creek Metropolitan District, the Upper Eagle Regional Water Authority and the soon to be built Castle Peak Senior Care Community.
Doris’ volunteerism is vast, and includes six years on the board and advisory board of the Vail Symposium, which provides educational programming for the public. She volunteers for the Vail Valley Foundation for many athletic and cultural events each year, and was president of Vail Club 50, a group of around 900 local full-time and part-time residents age 50 and up that take part in outdoor and social activities.
Before retiring to Colorado in 1994, Doris worked for 11 years in the US Department of Energy. After that, she worked for 10 years for Ashland Oil, a Kentucky-based large independent refinery and petroleum marketing firm, and worked for three years for the National Petroleum Refiners’ Association in Washington, D.C.
Doris grew up in Arlington, VA and graduated from Wakefield High School in 1965. In 1969, she received a bachelor’s degree cum laude in political science from Bryn Mar College in Pennsylvania. With a National Defense Education Act fellowship in foreign area studies, she earned a master’s degree in Latin American studies from the University of Texas at Austin in 1970.
Bob Ferguson is the founder and CEO of Jaywalker Lodge, an addiction treatment program for men in Carbondale. Prior to opening Jaywalker Lodge in 2005, Bob served for more than 10 years in senior management and business development at three leading companies in the addiction treatment field including Hazelden Foundation, Crossroads Antigua, and Promises Treatment Center.
At Jaywalker, Bob oversees a team of 50 full- and part-time treatment professionals. He continues to remain active in the addiction treatment community nationally by serving on the board of the National Association of Addiction Treatment Providers. Locally, in the Roaring Fork Valley, in addition to serving on the CMC Foundation board, he is a board member of the Valley Partnership for Drug Prevention and A Way Out Treatment Scholarship Fund in Aspen.
In 2012 Bob helped develop the Solutions Recovery Program, a collaboration between Jaywalker and CMC to create a path for people in early recovery to complete or continue college after treatment. The program is proving to be a supportive and effective way for newly sober students to reach their educational goals.
Bob lives with his wife, Andi, and their two teenage kids in Snowmass Village.
John Fielder is a nationally renowned photographer, publisher, teacher, and environmentalist. He hikes and skis hundreds of miles in Colorado alone each year — and drives thousands — in order to record on film its most sublime natural places. For the past 40 years, no one has traveled Colorado like John Fielder, from its rolling plains to the soaring Rocky Mountains and the Western Slope’s remote plateaus and river canyons.
He first visited Colorado at the age of 14 during a school field trip from North Carolina: “In all my life, I have not forgotten my first sight of the Rockies rising up before me over the plains. I was simply smitten by this wall of snow-capped peaks above a treeless plain. And the word C-O-L-O-R-A-D-O, it was the most poetic name for a place I had ever heard. I realized at that moment that someone or something had guided me to this place, and that I belonged here for the rest of my life.”
Though he started his family and planted his Colorado roots as a department store executive, he ultimately turned his avocation into a career. He is the photographer of more than 40 coffee table, guide, and children’s books, all but four about Colorado. He might be best known for creating Colorado’s best-selling book ever, Colorado: 1870 – 2000, which juxtaposes historic photographer William Henry Jackson’s images of the 19th-century landscape with those of today.
John Fielder has worked tirelessly to promote the protection of Colorado’s open space and wildlands. His photography has influenced people and legislation, earning him recognition including the Sierra Club’s Ansel Adams Award in 1993, and in 2011 the Aldo Leopold Foundation’s first Achievement Award given to an individual. He was an original governor-appointed member of the lottery-related Board of Great Outdoors Colorado, and speaks to thousands of people each year to rally support for timely land use and environmental issues.
Russ George recently completed five years as president of Colorado Northwestern Community College. CNCC serves the northwestern region of Colorado providing higher education opportunities to Rangely and Craig, where the main campuses are located, and to Meeker and South Routt County. CNCC is a member institution of the Colorado Community College System.
Prior to CNCC, Russ served as the executive director of the Colorado Department of Transportation. Preceding CDOT, Russ was the executive director of the Colorado Department of Natural Resources. In this role, he was a member of Great Outdoors Colorado, the Colorado Water Conservation Board and the Colorado Ground Water Commission.
Russ also served as the director of the Colorado Division of Wildlife, now known as the division of Colorado Parks and Wildlife.
Russ had previously been elected four times to the Colorado House of Representatives. The district included Moffat, Garfield, Rio Blanco and Pitkin Counties in western Colorado. In his fourth term he was elected by his peers to serve as Speaker of the House.
In his early career, Russ practiced law in Rifle with the law firm of Stuver & George. He was admitted to the Colorado bar in 1972 and the Montana bar in 1975. Russ is a graduate of Rifle High School, Colorado State University and Harvard Law School.
Current public service includes member and chairman of the Colorado Water Conservation Board, trustee and vice chairman of the Boettcher Foundation and trustee of the Western Colorado Community Foundation.
Russ and his wife Neal reside in Rifle, Colorado.
Scott is the president of Habitat for Humanity of the Roaring Fork Valley. He has been leading Habitat here in the valley for 10 years - expanding the organization from an all-volunteer operation to a staff- (of 35) driven organization. He has overseen and led the meteoric growth of Habitat’s ReStore to one of the 20 largest in the country.
In addition, when not consumed with Habitat, Scott does a range of advertising/marketing consulting, speaking engagements, and training across the country. He has recently consulted on lengthy projects with the chancellor for the University of Colorado’s Anschutz Medical Campus. He also led a three-year re-branding project for the University of Denver’s chancellor. He teaches the advertising class in CMC’s Bachelor of Science in business administration. His volunteer activities center on the Pre-Collegiate mentoring program (a partnership of CU Boulder/CMC/Roaring Fork School District) as a board member and mentor. He also recently served a three-year term on the board of the Colorado Rocky Mountain School, and has been a member of the Chadwick School’s board of trustees.
Scott’s most recent full-time position in the advertising industry was as co-CEO for Saatchi & Saatchi’s flagship New York office with over 500 employees. He spent a great deal of energy focusing on building the culture and spirit of the organization. Scott also served as one of 12 people on Saatchi & Saatchi’s worldwide executive board.
Prior to that, Scott Gilbert was CEO of the company’s L.A. offices, leading the business for their world-class clients, including Lexus, Toyota Motor Sales, and Procter & Gamble. As founder of its ad agency, Team One, he was instrumental in launching Lexus and in building the Lexus brand for over 10 years. He was selected as “Leader of the Year” by the Los Angeles Advertising Agencies Association, in 2000 and 2001.
Over the years, he has worked with a wide range of clients including Adidas, America West Airlines, Beech Aircraft, VCR Plus +, La Costa Hotel & Spa, Duracell, IBM, International Olympic Committee, Pepperdine University, and Tumi. In addition, Scott has received numerous awards; for example, his team received a prestigious film Gold Lion at the Cannes Festival in France, being recognized for the world’s best car ad in 2002.
Prior to entering the advertising field, Scott taught, coached, and served on the administration as head of The Middle School of Greens Farms Academy in Westport, Conn. He earned his M.B.A. at the University of Connecticut in 1979 and a B.S. in finance and management from Lehigh University in 1975.
Rich Glasier has held four high-level executive positions throughout his business career.
In 1967, Rich prepared for corporate work by earning a bachelor’s degree in economics from Cornell College, where today he serves on the college’s board. He received an M.B.A. in finance from Southern Methodist University in 1968.
He began his business career at NCR Corporation, where he was the director of corporate planning and analysis from 1969 to 1978, when Rich became corporation vice president and controller at Ramada Inn, Inc.
In 1985, his 17-year association with Royal Caribbean Cruise Line began. As executive vice president and chief financial officer, Rich was part of an executive team that grew the company from a small privately owned cruise line to a large, multinational public corporation with 24 ships worth $12 billion.
Following his work with Royal Caribbean, from 2002 to 2005 Rich became president, chief financial officer, and board member with the Argosy Gaming Company, a NYSE company with six casinos and 6,000 employees that generated more than $1 billion of revenue annually.
Rich is involved in several community organizations. He is a Rotarian and is part of the Executive Service Corps, which provides consulting services to regional nonprofit organizations. He also sits on the board of Carnival Cruise Line – a Fortune 100 company – where he serves as the audit committee chairman. He served as a member of the Colorado Mountain College Foundation Board from 2009-2015, chairing its audit committee and serving on the finance and investment committee.
Rich is retired and living with his wife in Carbondale, Colo. He enjoys skiing, biking, golf, travel, and time with family.
Mark C. Gould
Mark C. Gould
Mark Gould is the president of Gould Construction, Inc. (GCI), in Glenwood Springs, Colo., a fully integrated heavy construction and site development general contractor providing construction services within the state of Colorado. GCI's office is located in Glenwood Springs. Depending on the season, GCI employs more than 150 tradesmen and women. Construction services provided by GCI include all elements of infrastructure including bridge construction, utility and excavation work, and residential site development.
Mark has also served as a trustee on the Valley View Hospital Board of Trustees from 2002 to 2010 (chairman from 2005 to 2007); education chairman of the YPO Western Area Conference in 2002; chairman of the Colorado Chapter of YPO from 2000 to 2001; and a member of the Colorado Mountain College Foundation Board from 1996 to 2001 and 2009 to 2013.
Robert (Bob) Howard is a California-licensed lawyer, a real estate developer, and the managing partner of Airport Land Partners in Aspen, Colo. He graduated from law school at the University of California Hastings College of Law and has an undergraduate degree from California State University Long Beach.
Bob began his career as an associate with Bronson, Bronson & Mckinnon, San Francisco (1980-1983) and was a partner with Davis, Young & Mendolson, Alameda, Calif. (1983-1986). He then became general counsel and vice president, Berg-Revoir Corporation in Novato, Calif. (1986-1990), managing partner for Crystal River Land Company, Carbondale, Colo. (1992-2000), and the original developer of River Valley Ranch. Bob is currently undertaking development planning for Rifle Airpark, a master-planned business park in Rifle.
Bob began his association with Colorado Mountain College through his longtime friend Jim Calaway and served on the Colorado Mountain College Foundation Board from 2004-2010. In 2006 his Rifle Airport project donated a 13-acre site that became the new Colorado Mountain College campus in Rifle.
Walter Isaacson, Honorary Member
Walter Isaacson is a professor of history at Tulane and an advisory partner at Perella Weinberg, a financial services firm based in New York City. He is the past CEO of the Aspen Institute, where he is now a Distinguished Fellow, and has been the chairman of CNN and the editor of TIME magazine.
Isaacson’s most recent biography, “Leonardo da Vinci” (2017), offers new discoveries about da Vinci’s life and work, weaving a narrative that connects his art to his science. Walter is also the author of “The Innovators: How a Group of Hackers, Geniuses, and Geeks Created the Digital Revolution” (2014), “Steve Jobs” (2011), “Einstein: His Life and Universe” (2007), “Benjamin Franklin: An American Life” (2003), and “Kissinger: A Biography” (1992), and coauthor of “The Wise Men: Six Friends and the World They Made” (1986).
He is a host of the show “Amanpour and Company” on PBS and CNN, a contributor to CNBC, and host of the podcast “Trailblazers, from Dell Technologies.”
He is a graduate of Harvard College and of Pembroke College of Oxford University, where he was a Rhodes Scholar. He began his career at The Sunday Times of London and then the New Orleans Times-Picayune. He joined TIME in 1978 and served as a political correspondent, national editor, and editor of digital media before becoming the magazine’s 14th editor in 1996. He became chairman and CEO of CNN in 2001, and then president and CEO of the Aspen Institute in 2003.
He is chair emeritus of Teach for America. From 2005 to 2007 he was the vice chair of the Louisiana Recovery Authority, which oversaw the rebuilding after Hurricane Katrina. He was appointed by President Barack Obama and confirmed by the U.S. Senate to serve as the chairman of the Broadcasting Board of Governors, which runs Voice of America, Radio Free Europe, and other international broadcasts of the United States, a position he held from 2009 to 2012.
He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Royal Society of the Arts, and the American Philosophical Society. He serves on the board of United Airlines, the New Orleans City Planning Commission, the New Orleans Tricentennial Commission, Bloomberg Philanthropies, the Rockefeller Foundation, the Society of American Historians, the U.S. Defense Department Innovation Board, the Carnegie Institution for Science, and My Brother’s Keeper Alliance.
Ann Korologos, the owner of Ann Korologos Gallery in Basalt, Colo., is a longtime resident of the Roaring Fork Valley and a passionate art collector. Ann has been a government leader, nonprofit executive, and business professional for many years, serving as U.S. Secretary of Labor and Under Secretary of the U.S. Department of the Interior under President Reagan.
She serves on the boards of directors of many blue-chip U.S. corporations, including Michael Kors, Harman International, Host Hotels & Resorts, and Kellogg Company. She is also chairman emeritus of the Board of Trustees of the Aspen Institute and the RAND Corporation, and currently serves as chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Snowmass Village, Colo.

Amy Margerum Berg is President of The Better Angels Society, a non-profit organization that supports the work of renowned documentarian Ken Burns.
Prior to joining The Better Angels Society, Mrs. Berg served as Executive Vice President of Operations and Development at the Aspen Institute since 2000. She oversaw administration, finance, corporate governance, board relations, development and the Aspen, Colorado office and conference center. The Aspen Institute is an international leadership and policy oriented non-profit organization headquartered in Washington DC with offices in Aspen, Maryland, and New York. Under her purview, the Aspen Institute grew from assets of $50M to assets of over $250M. She successfully oversaw a $115M capital campaign, which generated funding for scholarships and special initiatives. She spearheaded the revitalization and renovation of the Aspen Meadows campus, including the construction of the Doerr-Hosier Center, a LEEDS Gold Certified conference facility, the renovation of the Paepcke Auditorium and the Aspen Meadows hotel.
Amy Berg also served as the City Manager for the City of Aspen, Colorado before working with the Aspen Institute. As the Chief Executive Officer for the City, which operates under a Council/Manager form of government, she was responsible for a $45 million annual budget and over 220 employees. Mrs. Margerum Berg is credited for moving the city from a financial deficit to one of Colorado’s strongest financial municipalities. Under her leadership, the City of Aspen implemented an innovative performance based management system that monitors the results of governmental services and rewards employees accordingly. The Innovations Group has recognized her executive abilities, where she has been a frequent speaker.
She lives in Jacksonville, Florida and Aspen, Colorado with her husband, Gilchrist Baker Berg and her son, Slater.
Tyler Moebius is the founder and chairman of FastG8, a digital marketing platform focused on helping large eTailers and outdoor brands reach their consumers direct across the web. Tyler also serves as a non-executive director of Adconion Media Group, of which he is also the founder and the former CEO. Prior to founding Adconion Media Group, Tyler was founder and COO of TrafficMarketplace in 2001, which was subsequently acquired by Vivendi Universal, where he later served as president.
Tyler started in digital advertising in 1998, where he was one of the first seed investors and founding employees at aQuantive, which later sold its ad serving technology, Atlas, to Microsoft for $6.1 billion. In 2012, Tyler was awarded the prestigious Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year award. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business administration
from Fort Lewis College.
Carrie Morgridge serves as the vice president and chief disruptor of the Morgridge Family Foundation. The mission of the foundation is to invest in transformative gifts. Carrie is the award-winning author of “Every Gift Matters – How Your Passion Can Change the World.” Her second book, “The Spirit of the Trail,” was released on May 5, 2018.
Carrie and her husband John created Student Support Foundation, a national organization that inspires youth philanthropy. For the past decade they have celebrated and advanced the educator profession by creating mindSpark Learning. mindSpark Learning is focused on empowering educators to tackle the most challenging conditions in their schools through Design Thinking and other strategies.
Carrie speaks nationally to education advocacy forums, at poverty alleviation conferences, and many convenings, globally, that are philanthropically focused. She divides her time between Colorado and Florida. She and John have two children who both reside in Denver, Colo.
Carrie and John are avid athletes. In fact, they recently mountain biked across the country on the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route covering 2,774 miles from Canada to Mexico in 46 days. Carrie has completed nine Ironman competitions.
Steven J. Phillips
Steven J. Phillips
Steven J. Phillips, M.D., is the director of specialized information services and an associate director at the National Library of Medicine (NLM), the National Institutes of Health, and the Department of Health & Human Services. He is leading the effort to establish a disaster information management research center at the NLM. This center, totally devoted to disaster informatics, is the first of its kind in the world.
Dr. Phillips is a graduate of Hobart College and Tufts Medical School and is board certified both in general and thoracic surgery. In 1997 Dr. Phillips was interviewed by the White House search committee for the position of commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration, and was invited to testify before the full Committee on Commerce as a witness on the implementation of the Food and Drug Administration Modernization Act of 1997.
He served twice in Vietnam and retired from the U.S. Army Reserve as a lieutenant colonel in 1993. He is a life member of the 101st Airborne Association and is an invited associate life member of the UDT-SEAL Association. He sits on the board of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Reception Center, and serves as a member of a congressionally mandated Wounded Warriors task force. He is past president of the American Society for Artificial Internal Organs, the Society of Cardiac Surgeons of Spain, and the Polk County Medical Society in Iowa. His work is published in approximately 125 peer-reviewed medical journals and has been granted six patents. He is married to Susan Zeff Phillips and resides in Bethesda, Md. They have five children and five grandchildren.
Carole Segal is co-founder of Crate and Barrel and founder and former CEO of Foodstuffs Inc.
She is chair of the Rush University Board of Governors and a trustee of Rush University Medical Center, trustee emerita of Bates College, trustee emerita of the Illinois Institute of Technology, co-chair of the Illinois Business Immigration Coalition and a Lincoln Park Zoo Board member.
She graduated from Northwestern University with a Bachelor of Arts in English and is on the Board of Visitors of the Judd A. and Marjorie Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences at Northwestern University.
Marian Smith is a lifelong resident of Glenwood Springs, Colo. During an era when women rarely led companies or communities, Marian paved the way for women in leadership positions by example and encouraged other women to follow in her footsteps. In the more than 125-year history of Garfield County and Glenwood Springs, Marian was the first female Glenwood Springs City Council member and the only female mayor to date. She was also the first of only two female Garfield County commissioners. Additionally, Marian served as the first woman on the boards and in leadership positions for organizations in fields such as soil conservation, mine reclamation, and other areas not normally governed by women at that time. Each of Marian’s endeavors involved leading by example and encouraging women of all ages to be involved in public service and politics at all levels.
Marian’s career was professional community service. Within that field, she was a recognized statewide leader who received many honors, appointments, and recognitions. Marian served on numerous boards and commissions, which impacted the environmental, economic, and social health of the county and city. She was appointed by the governor to several of these boards and served in leadership positions on many of them. A few examples of her service include: Mt. Sopris Soil Conservation Service Board; Big Country Resource Conservation and Development Area Board; Colorado Geological Survey Board; Minerals, Energy, and Geology Political Advisory Board; Territorial Daughters of Colorado; Colorado Justice Assistance Grant Board; Garfield County Emergency Communications Authority Board; Club 20; Colorado Air Quality Commission; and Colorado Natural Hazards Mitigation Council. Marian is also a donor to various local community nonprofit organizations.

Jon is a retired vice president of quality and customer satisfaction at Nortel Networks. Prior to Nortel, Jon worked for IBM and took early retirement as the Asia director of quality. He holds degrees in engineering and business from the University of Colorado and M.B.A. and law degrees from the University of Denver. While Jon was working at IBM, he and his family lived in Tokyo for four years, during which time he traveled extensively throughout Asia. After retiring from IBM, Jon joined Nortel. When Nortel opened their World Trade operations in London, he and his family moved to London for four years while Jon traveled between Asia, Europe, Canada, and the U.S. In 1998, Jon took early retirement from Nortel and he and his family returned home to Colorado.
Jon was a member of the Colorado Mountain College Foundation Board from 2008 to 2014 and served as board chair from 2012 to 2015. He is also active in the Roaring Fork region and serves on the Valley View Hospital Foundation Board, was past president of the Roaring Fork Water and Sanitation District, is an ambassador for the Aspen Skiing Company, and is president of the Aspen Glen Homeowners Association. He also stays involved with the University of Colorado and University of Denver. Jon is an avid skier and golfer. He regularly takes classes at CMC and enjoys interfacing with other students, faculty, and staff.

J. Robert (Bob) Young is the chairman and founder of Alpine Bank of Colorado. Originally from Wichita, Kan., Bob graduated from Wichita State University in 1961 and went to work for the FDIC as an assistant bank examiner. Bob moved to Denver in 1965 and served as executive vice president of FirstBank of Colorado, directly supervising subsidiary banks, including FirstBank of Vail, which he opened in 1968. During his time with FirstBank, Bob completed the Graduate School of Banking at the University of Wisconsin and served on FirstBank’s board of directors until 1997.
In 1973, Bob and several investors began what is now known as Alpine Bank in Carbondale, Colo. The bank has since grown into an organization that operates 38 locations in Denver and western Colorado and serves a total of nearly 100,000 customers. Since founding Alpine Bank, Bob has emphasized philanthropy and community involvement. In addition to the hundreds of students who benefit from the Alpine Bank Latino/Hispanic Scholarships that Bob started in 1996, he has also established a legacy gift to benefit future CMC students. Bob served on the Colorado Mountain College Foundation Board from 1999 to 2004, and continues to be a consistent, dedicated supporter of Colorado Mountain College and its students.
In 1988, Colorado Gov. Roy Romer appointed Bob to serve as chairman of the Colorado State Banking Board. He served on that board for more than 17 years, having been reappointed numerous times by both Democrat and Republican governors. He stepped down in 2007. Bob was named Colorado’s Outstanding Philanthropist in 1995. In 2006, Bob received the Athena Award from the Glenwood Springs Chamber Resort Association for his support of women's causes and women in the workforce. This is an international award and less than five percent of its recipients are men. Bob was recognized by the U.S. House of Representatives in 2008 as a result of being named a 2008 Benefactor of the Year by the Council for Resource Development.

Carrie Besnette Hauser, Ph.D.
Dr. Carrie Besnette Hauser is president and CEO of Colorado Mountain College, a public two- and four-year degree-granting institution with 11 campuses and learning locations serving 12,000 square miles of the central Rocky Mountains. Her career has included a variety of leadership roles in higher education, private foundations, and the public policy arena. She has been a senior executive at the Kauffman Foundation, the Daniels Fund, and Metropolitan State University of Denver. While at Daniels, she was a loaned executive advising Denver’s mayor on a citywide college scholarship program and assisting the Metro Denver Sports Commission on an initiative to attract top-tier sporting events, including the Olympic Games.
Hauser has taught at UCLA, the University of Denver, and Colorado State University. She has held legislative staff roles as well as positions with the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education and the University of Arizona, her undergraduate alma mater. She earned her master’s and Ph.D. degrees from UCLA and completed the Advanced Management Program at the Wharton School of Business.
Hauser has served on a variety of boards and commissions including past president of the National Scholarship Providers Association (NSPA) and gubernatorial appointments to Colorado’s Blue Ribbon Commission on Health Care Reform and the Colorado Commission on Higher Education. She was Denver’s 9News Leader of the Year in 2008. She is currently a member of the Glenwood Springs Chamber Board of Directors, the Vail Valley Partnership Board of Governors, El Pomar Foundation Northwest Regional Council, and the American Rivers National Board of Directors.
Hauser has summited Mt. Kilimanjaro, climbed to the Mt. Everest base camp, and was a Grand Canyon “swamper” (river guide) for 10 summers. She and her husband, Jeff, enjoy skiing, backpacking, biking, and exploring the Rocky Mountain West and remote places around the world.
