Local artists explore alternative photographic and ceramics processes and give talks

Sept. 20, 2024 - “Flora: Work by Deborah Shannan, Sally Cole, and Molly Altman,” will feature an opening reception on Wednesday, Sept. 25 from 4 to 7 p.m. featuring Shannan, a graduate of CMC’s professional photography program; longtime valley resident Sally Cole; and Carbondale Clay resident artist Molly Altman. At 5:30 p.m., each will give a talk on their work and creative process.

An art exhibition featuring  these local artists from the Roaring Folk Valley is currently at Colorado Mountain College’s Aspen campus and runs through Nov. 29. The show’s theme revolves around personal abstraction of nature through alternative photographic processes like cyanotypes and platinum prints, and ceramic techniques like porcelain slip dipping

The CMC Aspen Art Gallery is located at the Colorado Mountain College Aspen campus at the Aspen Business Center. Offering three rotating exhibitions each year that coincide with the fall, spring and summer semesters, the gallery focuses on the works of local and regional artists.

Lauren Mayer, associate professor of art and gallery director says both the gallery aesthetics and the quality and quantity of local artists who show their work at the campus contribute to a local arts scene.

“The artists in this show see nature for what it is and celebrate it in a new way,” said Mayer. “Despite their different mediums, all three are abstractionists in how they see and feel the world and translate nature through their eyes and hands. The space is unique in that it’s both a classroom and a gallery and goes back and forth between the two.”
