Mujeres Activas en Letras y Cambio Social de CMC (MALCS ) are proud to present the free community event: Como La Flor: Cultivating Selena Scholars March 31st 2022, 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Join us in this interactive virtual event via Zoom dedicated to celebrate Selena Quintanilla’s legacy. Spanish translation will be available. Guest Speaker: Sonya M. Alemán is an Associate Professor at the University of Texas at San Antonio in the department of Race, Ethnicity, Gender and Sexuality Studies. She saw Selena perform four times when she was in college and now she teaches Texas’ first class on La Reina de la Musica Tejana. Because she studies media representations of Latinas/os/xs and Chicanas/os/xs—she watches a LOT of TV and gets to call it research. She studies intersections of race, racism, and whiteness in the media. She also seeks to improve the educational experiences of students of color. She currently serves as the Lead Editor of Chicana/Latina Studies: The Journal of Mujeres Activas en Letras y Cambio Social. To attend, please register here.
