Aspen Institute names Colorado Mountain College as a semifinalist for $1 million Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence

The CMC Steamboat Springs campus from the air Glenwood Springs, Colorado —  The Aspen Institute named Colorado Mountain College as one of 25 semifinalists for the 2027 Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence. Rooted in deep research and backed by $1 million in award money, the Aspen Prize is the nation’s signature recognition of community colleges that deliver value for their students.

“This recognition from the Aspen Institute reflects years of focused work across Colorado Mountain College to help more students succeed, graduate and move into strong careers,” said CMC President Matt Gianneschi. “This month, we’ll graduate more students than at any point in our history, a nearly 20% increase over last year, which shows what’s possible when you stay focused on students.”

Colorado Mountain College offers certificate programs, associate and bachelor’s degrees to students across an 11-campus district in eight western, rural Colorado counties, where access to affordable higher education can be limited. The college has focused on expanding short-term credentials, improving advising and aligning programs with regional workforce needs — helping more students complete programs and move into careers in fields like health care, education, business and skilled trades.

The 25 semifinalists, which come from 20 states, were selected from nearly 1,000 institutions nationwide based on their outcomes data and collegewide practices aligned to achieving high and improving levels of student success. The Aspen Institute defines student success as helping students learn, complete a credential, and go on to a good job or continue their education, whether through bachelor’s degree programs offered by institutions like Colorado Mountain College or through transfer opportunities elsewhere.

“We start every cycle of the Aspen Prize with a simple question,” said Josh Wyner, executive director of the Aspen Institute College Excellence Program. “Which community colleges are best at not just helping students graduate, but ensuring that what they learn and the credentials they earn actually help them meet their goals and have a better life?”

The Aspen Prize is awarded every two years and recognizes excellence across a wide range of institutions, from Florida’s large, multi-campus Valencia College in 2011 to rural Southwest Wisconsin Technical College in 2025. The top colleges, no matter their size or location, ensure students complete programs with strong regional labor market value and clear pathways to continued education.

For Colorado Mountain College, the recognition highlights the college’s growing role in preparing students for the region’s workforce and expanding opportunity across mountain communities.

“At CMC, we believe college should help people build a better future,” Gianneschi said. “That means offering programs that lead to good jobs, higher pay and greater opportunities. In the high-cost mountain communities we serve, earning a strong wage can make the difference between getting by and getting ahead. We look closely at what employers need and how our graduates succeed so students can feel confident their education will pay off.”

About the Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence

The Aspen Prize selection process began in October 2025, when the Aspen Institute identified 200 community colleges based on data demonstrating strong and improving student outcomes in key areas — including learning, completion, transfer leading to bachelor’s attainment, and workforce success — and invited them to apply. From there, 170 colleges submitted applications, which were reviewed by a selection committee of 15 higher education experts who evaluated each submission using both extensive data and narrative responses. The institute then interviewed the leadership teams from colleges receiving top scores, and 25 semifinalists were selected.

In the coming weeks, the 15-member panel of experts will continue its review and narrow the field to 10 finalists, which will be announced in June. In fall 2026, teams of experts will conduct in-depth site visits to those 10 finalist colleges and review extensive data, including actual wage data for graduates. The Aspen Prize winner will be announced in April 2027.
