CMC Spring Valley to hold Roaring Fork Valley commencements on May 2 and 3

Graduates from CMC Aspen, Carbondale, Spring Valley and the Glenwood Center will participate in multiple commencement ceremonies on Friday, May 2 and Saturday, May 3. Three ceremonies will be held at CMC Spring Valley. An additional ceremony for Fire Academy 1 and high school concurrent enrollment students will be hosted at Carbondale’s fire training center.

Collegewide, 15 ceremonies total are being held at 11 campuses and additional sites throughout CMC’s 7,500-square-mile district from April 17 through May 5 to celebrate the accomplishments of the college’s graduating class of 2024-25.

Colorado Law Enforcement Training Academy commencement

Coby Cosper, Avon Police Department deputy chief, will give the keynote address at the Colorado Law Enforcement Training Academy ceremony at 1 p.m., May 2 in the New Space Theatre at the Spring Valley campus.

Deputy Chief Cosper has over 14 years in law enforcement and more than 20 years of military service in the U.S. Navy. A graduate of the FBI National Academy, he holds degrees in security management and homeland security and teaches leadership and ethics across Colorado. Under his leadership, the Avon Police Department has adopted nationally recognized programs that support de-escalation, decision-making and community trust.

CMC Fire Science commencement

A ceremony for emergency medical technicians-B, Fire Academy 1 and high school concurrent enrollment emergency medical responders will be held at 6 p.m. on Friday, May 2 at the Carbondale Fire’s training center.

Nurse pinning and commencement

Dr. Mary Ann Jessee, CMC’s dean of nursing, will give the keynote address at the nurse pinning and commencement ceremony at 9 a.m., May 3 at the CMC Spring Valley Field House.

Jessee holds a doctorate, is a registered nurse and a certified nurse educator. She recently accepted her position at Colorado Mountain College after serving as the assistant dean at Vanderbilt University School of Nursing in Nashville, Tennessee. A recognized leader in nursing education, she focuses on clinical judgment development and curricular innovation. Jessee founded the International Consortium for Outcomes of Nursing Education, a global group of nursing educators and researchers who work together to understand and improve nursing education.

General commencement

The general commencement ceremony will be held at 12 p.m., on May 3, at the CMC Spring Valley Field House. Judge Elise Myer will give the keynote address.

Appointed in June 2023, Myer serves the Ninth Judicial District, handling criminal, family, civil and child welfare cases in Garfield, Pitkin and Rio Blanco counties. Originally from Pittsburgh, she earned degrees in Spanish and sociology from Temple University and a law degree from American University in 2010. Myer began her legal career as a public defender in Glenwood Springs, later becoming a supervising and then managing attorney. She now brings that experience to the bench. Outside of work, she enjoys books, the outdoors, and time with her wife and their dog, Lincoln.
