CMC Vail Valley offering free civics discussions through April
VAIL VALLEY - As part of the build-up to the conjoined 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States and Colorado’s own 150th anniversary celebrations, Colorado Mountain College’s Center for Civics Education & Empowerment is offering ways for community members to learn about and participate in modern governing.
CMC’s Vail Valley at Edwards campus is hosting a new civics lecture series. In addition, CMC and High Five Access Media are offering a civics course that will run from March through April. All events are free and open to the public.
‘Civics for the People’
The CMC Vail Valley campus is currently hosting the lecture series, “Civics for the People” in person. Lectures feature Eric Heil, a longstanding local government attorney who currently serves as Avon’s town manager.
Heil’s lectures focus on a different topic every session: On March 3, “Your Government at Work” will be the topic. On March 17, Heil will discuss “Policy from Proposal to Law.” On April 7, the topic will be “Where Does my Money Go?” and April 21’s lecture will address “Citizenship in Action.”
Kristen Green, CMC Vail Valley at Edwards continuing education coordinator, said Heil’s lectures are designed to help residents understand the role they can play in helping to steer policymaking and participate in our democracy in ways that feel relevant to them.
“People may sometimes feel helpless as an individual or wonder what one person can do, but CMC has provided this opportunity to help them engage civically,” she said. “The hope is for people to come together as a community, which is how really powerful things can happen.”
High Five Access Media
In addition, CMC’s Center for Civics has partnered with Vail Valley’s High Five Access Media to offer “Civics 101.” High Five Media is providing the instructor and guest lecturers for the course, which will run in-person at the CMC Edwards campus Mondays from 6-8 p.m., March 30 to April 20.
CMC Vail Valley at Edwards is at 150 Miller Ranch Road, Edwards. For more information on both series, contact Kristen Green at 970-569-2907 or visit the Center for Civics Education & Engagement.
