Center for Civics Education & Engagement
“Peacemaking in Community - Mediation Training,” is available at no cost to community members through a grant from Colorado Mountain College’s Center for Civics Education & Engagement. In an era of growing civic disconnection, the new collegewide center serves as a catalyst for renewal, focusing on strengthening civic education and connections with students and the public. The mediation training marks the center’s first offering at CMC Carbondale.
Building stronger communities through mediation skills
Mediation skills serve as powerful tools for fostering healthier, more connected communities. Students will learn effective communication techniques, relationship building strategies and problem-solving approaches that can be applied in families, workplaces, schools and neighborhood settings. The training covers conflict theory, dispute resolution processes, ethics and values, and both court-annexed and community mediation practices.
According to Huber, skills learned in the training go far beyond formal mediation settings. She explained that students gain abilities that help them navigate difficult conversations, bridge divides and create understanding in everyday interactions, which are essential in building peaceful, resilient communities.
Expert instruction from a leader in the field
Huber brings extensive experience in mediation, education and organizational leadership. She currently serves as rector of St. Peter of the Valley Episcopal Church in Basalt and has worked widely in family mediation, employment disputes, organizational conflict and community peacemaking. She is also a certified Daring Way facilitator, leading workshops grounded in Dr. Brené Brown’s research on courage, vulnerability, shame and empathy.
Huber has taught at institutions including the University of Houston Law Center, Pepperdine University School of Law, Rice University, and Lipscomb University. She is author of multiple books on negotiation, mediation, and alternative dispute resolution, and holds a Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Houston Law Center.
