Colorado Mountain College presents ‘A Legacy of Courage: Honoring Martin Luther King Jr.'

Colorado Mountain College is hosting “A Legacy of Courage Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.” from 11-12:30 p.m. on Jan. 20. This free presentation at CMC Steamboat Springs will be streamed live throughout the college's district and the public is invited and encouraged to attend.

The keynote speaker will be distinguished Colorado native and legal leader Judge Gary M. Jackson. A graduate of the University of Colorado Boulder, Jackson obtained his law degree there in 1970.

Among his professional achievements, Jackson served at the Denver District Attorney’s Office and the U.S. Attorney District Office of Colorado. The recipient of numerous honors and judicial awards, Jackson played a key role in the development of Coors Field in downtown Denver and has worked to expand judicial diversity in Colorado. Gov. Jared Polis has also appointed Jackson to the commission to commemorate Colorado’s sesquicentennial in 2026.

During his presentation, Jackson will discuss Lincoln Hills, a resort community located in the mountains about 40 miles west of Denver in Coal Creek Canyon. Created by and for Black Americans in 1922 partially in reaction to the Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921 and amidst segregation battles, at one time it was the only Black resort in the Mountain West, according to History Colorado.

“A Legacy of Courage” will begin at 11 a.m. live at the college’s Steamboat Springs campus and virtually with Judge Jackson giving his keynote presentation at 11:20 a.m. At 11:45 a.m. CMC President Matt Gianneschi will hold a fireside chat, followed by an open Q&A at 12:05 p.m. The event will conclude at 12:30 p.m.
