High school mountain bike racing is coming to CMC Leadville's trails – twice

Aug. 18, 2023 – This year, Colorado Mountain College is mountain bike racing central for the Colorado High School Cycling League. Out of nine races total in the league’s race series, CMC will host four of those races.

League student-athletes will race twice on Leadville’s campus trails in August and September, while CMC Spring Valley at Glenwood Springs will host a race weekend Sept. 9-10 and the state championships Oct. 21-22.

Over the weekend of Aug. 26-27, the league’s high school mountain bike racers will compete at the first race of their regular season with races at CMC Leadville. They’ll be back in Leadville on the weekend of Sept. 23-24.

The Colorado High School Cycling League organizes the races. Founded in 2009, the league has grown increasingly popular every year, and includes students from Colorado as well as southern Wyoming, northern New Mexico, and South Dakota. Because of the number of participants, teams are divided into four regions. For Leadville’s races, two league regions will race, composed of over 60 teams total from Leadville, Salida, Telluride, and dozens of other high school locations.

The interscholastic high school league and Colorado Mountain College go back to 2013 when the college began hosting races at the Leadville campus. CMC became a sponsor of the league in 2015. The league favors course designs that can accommodate a range of abilities from a first-time freshman racer to a seasoned senior who may also be a sponsored elite racer.
