LEADVILLE — The Willow Fire started Sunday afternoon, June 28, in the Mt. Massive Wilderness area, prompting evacuations for many around the Turquoise Lake area. The fire quickly grew to over 1,066 acres Sunday, according to the Lake County Office of Emergency Management (LCOEM).

As of 12:20 p.m., Monday, June 29, the fire was at 1,200 acres.

Since the fire is on U.S. Forest Service (USFS) land, the USFS is heading the firefighting operation.

"They're pulling as many resources as they can to address this," Heath Speckman, Lake County Sheriff, said in a press conference at 11 a.m. Monday. "They're pretty stretched thin with all the other fires going on in the region."
