POW’s Stoke Fest Film Tour and Stoke the Vote at CMC Spring Valley Oct. 10

POW’s Stoke Fest Film Tour and Stoke the Vote, combining mountain film and election awareness, is coming to Colorado Mountain College’s Spring Valley campus on Oct. 10. Among other shorts, the festival will highlight “Purple Mountains – Live Free or Die” featuring professional snowboarder Jeremy Jones, founder and president of Protect Our Winters (POW), a nonprofit outdoor organization that advocates for policies and action that address climate change issues. Jones will be in attendance.

In “Purple Mountains – Live Free or Die,” Jones explores the impacts of climate change in the New Hampshire mountains where he grew up. In the first “Purple Mountains” film from 2020, Jones outlined the tremendous political and social divisions created around climate change.

Professional skier Amie Engerbretson will also attend Spring Valley’s event when she presents her film “The Hypocrite,” that addresses how elements of the snow sports industry contribute negatively to climate change. According to POW’s website, the film "introduces the concept of imperfect advocacy and encourages unity and collaboration among individuals who share a common passion for the outdoors and for the protection of their playgrounds." More films are continually being added to the lineup.

The film festival will also focus on voting awareness. “We’re gearing up for the most crucial election of our lifetime,” said Erin Sprague, POW’s CEO. “We’ve curated the perfect film fest to fire you up for the polls. Expect fresh, inspiring films, powerful panel discussions with climate advocates.”

Additionally, as part of Colorado Mountain College’s commitment to providing information during this election year, following POW’s event on Oct. 10, the Spring Valley campus is hosting New York Times bestselling author Dr. Richard Haass and his “Bill of Obligations: Ten Habits of Good Citizens,” from 6-8 p.m. on Oct. 14 in a free Rediscovering Common Ground/Common Reader presentation. Visit Common Reader for information on Haass’ six author talks and to register.

POW’s Stoke Fest Film Tour and Stoke the Vote will take place from 6:30 to 9 p.m. on Oct. 10 with doors opening at 6:30 p.m. and the program beginning at 7 p.m. at CMC Spring Valley, Outdoor Leadership Center and Field House, 3000 County Road 114, Glenwood Springs. Admission is $10; to purchase tickets and for more information, visit Stoke Fest.
