Sopris Theatre Company’s season closes with 'The Cottage,' a fun-filled farce

Sex, lies and revelations galore are just part of the silly fun as Sopris Theatre Company rounds out its 2025-26 season with Sandy Rustin’s “The Cottage.”

An entertaining romantic comedy in the style of playwright Noel Coward, “The Cottage” will be staged at New Space Theatre at CMC’s Spring Valley campus (3000 County Road 114), with 7 p.m. shows April 10, 11, 17 and 18, and 2 p.m. performances April 12 and 19.

Those who’d like to enjoy the performance and the post-show conversations from the comfort of their own home also have the option of livestream access to performances held April 11, 12 and 17 – visit "The Cottage" to get access to those virtual performances.

Director Brad Moore, Sopris Theatre Company’s producing artistic director, says “The Cottage” offers a fitting alternative to some of the more serious-minded shows earlier this season.

“We were looking for something that was just simple fun, as everything else had pretty heavy messages this year – this show is more like, ‘can’t we all just laugh for a little while?’”

“The Cottage” is an intriguingly convoluted comedy which follows the chain of events set off when a woman decides to reveal her affair not only to her husband, but to her lover’s unsuspecting wife.

“The Cottage” features an ensemble cast of local performers including Joshua Adamson, Michael Banks, Gerald DeLisser, Marie LaBrecque, Julia Whalen and Pax Wild. Behind the scenes, the bulk of the show’s production team are current CMC students.

Moore says the play is also a continued partnership with Aspen Community Theatre. In exchange for allowing ACT to rehearse “Rumors” last fall at the CMC campus theater, Sopris Theatre Company is re-imagining ACT’s set for “The Cottage,” and saving thousands of dollars of production costs in the process.

The play, which was first produced in 2013, ran in New York City at Broadway’s Helen Hayes Theater in the summer of 2023, with Seinfeld actor Jason Alexander as its director and “Will & Grace” star Eric McCormack in the cast.

Tickets for the show are $20 for adults and $15 for seniors, students and CMC faculty and staff. Visit tickets or "The Cottage" to access tickets and livestream performances.

New Space Theatre is located at CMC Spring Valley, 3000 County Road 114, Glenwood Springs.
