Workshops on valuing, selling small businesses offered June 6-7

The Yampa Valley Entrepreneurship Center at Colorado Mountain College Steamboat Springs will host two related workshops to help local small business owners value and sell their businesses. Selling a small business can be one of the most complex and important transactions in a person’s life. The workshops will define valuation principles, the selling process, legal concerns, due diligence and closing activities.

On June 6 from 6 to 7 p.m., a workshop called “Valuing a Small Business” will define the calculations that are used nationally to determine market value for a business. This process is backed by substantial database information from business sales across industries and geographies within the United States. The workshop will review what business features and financial reporting history can do to raise or drop the value of a business.

On June 7 from 9 to 10:30 a.m., a related workshop called “Selling a Small Business” will define tactics to take in advance of listing your business for sale to increase value and marketability.  The workshop will also discuss how to list your business, deal with prospective buyers, what information to offer and when, the steps involved in a typical business sale and how to prepare for the transition out of a business.

Both workshops would be of interest to persons interested in purchasing a business as well and will be held in the Eagle’s Nest meeting room, SB 302, on the third floor of the Academic Center at Colorado Mountain College Steamboat Springs and are offered at no cost.  The instructor is Steve Hitchcock, a business broker who has represented dozens of small business people in the sale or purchase of a small business in western Colorado.
