Moving Forward on a Path Grounded in Civility In Peace
Moving Forward on a Path Grounded in Civility In Peace

Statement by Dr. Carrie Besnette Hauser, President & CEO, Colorado Mountain College
I am deeply saddened by the events taking place in Washington, D.C., and across our country today. We are better than this – individually, collectively, and as a nation.
Please join me in recommitting ourselves to the highest standards of our republic, to open dialogue and debate, and to mutual respect. Our country has been an exemplar of democratic ideals including the respectful transfer of power following regular elections. Regardless of who wins, we accept the results and remain harmonious and grounded in the principles of our constitution. Violence is never an appropriate course of action to grieve our differences. Never.
As we all watch the conclusion of a truly unprecedented election and the transition of administrations, let us recommit our care and concern for each other – including those we don’t know or have never met, or with whom we disagree. CMC endeavors to be a truly inclusive institution; this demands that we acknowledge, welcome, and respect everyone, including those with differing views or beliefs.
As evening falls in Washington, D.C., I pray for the safety of all law enforcement professionals trying to restore calm to our nation’s capital and cities from coast to coast. I have no doubt that American ideals of democracy and decency will ultimately prevail, but sincerely hope that the path ahead will be one grounded not in chaos or mayhem but rather in civility and peace.
May our local mountain communities continue to be beacons of hope and safe havens in the days and weeks that lie ahead.
