What is AASHE-STARS?
As our new school year kicks off, we wanted to re-introduce our Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System, also known as STARS! STARS is the most widely used system for colleges and universities worldwide to measure their sustainability performance. This system was developed by the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE). AASHE helps institutions like us to track progress across teaching, campus operations, engagement, and planning.
In 2024, we proudly received our first "Silver" rating. STARS compares our performance with peer institutions to earn public recognition through Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum ratings. Our goal for the next year and upcoming reporting cycle is "going for GOLD"! This public rating proves we walk the talk on climate action, equity, green infrastructure, and community engagement.
But our score greatly depends on real participation from students and staff. That means you! Every survey, event RSVP, and training attended helps CMC earn a stronger rating. Even our new Sustainable CMC Newsletter aims to inform, inspire, and advance STARS initiatives at CMC.
Stay tuned for more ways to engage with our STARS initiatives soon! Together, we can collaborate in great ways to reduce our environmental impact as an institution, while actively building a better future for all. Learn more at stars.aashe.org
