Professor, Biology
970-870-4446 | redmiston@coloradomtn.edu

Location: Steamboat Springs

Education

  • MS in Integrative Physiology, University of Colorado Boulder
  • BS in Environmental Biology, Mount Union College

I am interested in the intersection between sustainability and biology. Most folks think of microbes and genetics as something they only need to know about if they want to be a doctor, but they play such a huge role in our natural world as well. To me permaculture is the perfect blend, an applied form of ecology.

I am a beekeeper and love learning about bees. I enjoy sharing what I know as co-advisor of CMC's student Beekeeping Club as well as the president of the Routt County Beekeeping Association. I am also the co-advisor for the Phi Theta Kappa academic honorary.

Research Interests

I've researched bird populations, worked on recovery of an endangered bird in Hawaii, and studied how bird disease can affect their mating success. I've researched a deadly amphibian fungus in Australia and butterfly diversity in Venezuela. Currently my research focus is on undergraduate science education, and I enjoy helping students conduct experiments as well as testing things out on my bees.

Awards

  • CMC Steamboat Springs Faculty of the Year 2011-2012

Personal interests

All things outdoors. In 2010 I thru-hiked the Colorado trail. In 2012 I thru-biked it (with wilderness detours). I like mountain biking, backcountry skiing and cross country skiing.

Academic and Professional Pursuits

Over the past three years I have enjoyed teaching a variety of courses in the English department of CMC's Summit campuses. Additionally, I worked as a freelance writer under the business heading River Bridge Communications. From writing ad copy to text book companion Web sites to articles covering anything from the evolution of skiing to water wars in the West, I wrote my way around Summit County and the surrounding areas. I am currently revising a collection of essays about family, place, and the search for the good life set against the backdrop of northern Minnesota's lake country. Two chapters have been published in Hayden's Ferry Review and The Oakland Review.

MBA & Bachelor of Marketing, Regis University, Denver. Associate of Applied Science, Ski and Snowboard Business &  Associate of Science, Colorado Mountain College, Steamboat

Work History

After completing my degrees, I worked for various snowsport companies in areas such as marketing, product design, and sales. I am a passionate skier and have a Level 3 Avalanche certification which I use to help educate students on backcountry travel and safety as part of being the advisor to CMC Backcountry club.

The courses I teach focus on the marketing, manufacturing and media components of the action-sport industry. I have been involved in various marketing and product design projects for brands like Nordica, Helly Hansen, Spyder, Uvex, and more. I bring the knowledge from my previous professional career to the classroom and strive to create real-world situations for my students. The Ski and Snowboard Business (SKB) program, is the only program in the nation focusing on retail, marketing and manufacturing aspects of the action-sport industry.
