The grant is intended to expand the college’s capacity to offer affordable and meaningful study-abroad opportunities for students who less often take study-abroad courses – including low-income, first-generation and other underrepresented students. CMC is one of 24 colleges and universities from across the United States, selected from 115 applicants, to create, expand and/or diversify American student mobility overseas in support of U.S. foreign policy goals. The IDEAS grant amounts to $35,000 and is specifically funding the creation of the Pucon Kayak Retreat Cooperative Leadership and Management program, a new CMC study abroad educational opportunity in Chile that will be offered in the 2021-22 academic year. The course will be introduced depending on health and travel considerations related to the COVID-19 pandemic. To further support students, the CMC Foundation is continually looking into scholarship opportunities for students interested in studying abroad. Public invited to virtual artists’ talk at CMC Aspen Nov. 13

Public invited to virtual artists’ talk at CMC Aspen Nov. 13 Anderson Ranch’s Deroualle, CMC’s Gair unite in ‘Material Landscape’ On display at Colorado Mountain College Aspen is the exhibit “Material Landscape,” featuring ceramics by Louise Deroualle and Stuart Gair. The community is invited to a free, Q&A-style interview via Zoom at 4 p.m. Nov. 13. Gair is a new ceramics faculty member at CMC Aspen, and Deroualle is the ceramics studio coordinator at Anderson Ranch Arts Center. Gair writes on his website: “I make pottery that is intricately decorated and utilitarian in nature. It is important that each piece is approachable and highly functional to establish trust with the viewer and invite closer examination. As a student of history, I’m drawn to the essence of strength found in architecture, masonry and work that has endured through time. Surface treatment provides me the opportunity to explore these interests through the subtleties of architectural pattern, detail and geometry.” In her artist’s statement, Deroualle says, “My work is an abstracted representation of me: my identity, the way in which I relate to others and understand the environment I am in. I use ceramic materials to create formal abstractions that reveal different facets — physical, experiential, emotional — of myself.” To receive the Zoom link for the artists’ talk Nov. 13, please contact K Cesark at kcesark@coloradomtn.edu. In addition to the Zoom Q&A, the exhibit is on view at the campus through Dec. 11, by appointment only. To schedule a time to visit the gallery in person, please call 970-925-7740. CMC Aspen is located at 0255 Sage Way.

Student-to-student support: CMC Rifle’s Peer Mentor program creates helpful student network

Student-to-student support: CMC Rifle’s Peer Mentor program creates helpful student network CMC Rifle’s Peer Mentor program creates helpful student network You’ve made the decision. You’re taking the leap and registering for Colorado Mountain College. But now what? Is there someone you can go to for encouragement and inspiration, and to walk with you as you figure out how to incorporate college into your life? At CMC Rifle, the Peer Mentor program is here to help. Tinker Duclo, CMC vice president and Rifle campus dean, launched the program, collaborating with student mentors Holly Keesee, Chloe Krebill, Alan Muñoz and others wanting to create a student-to-student support system at the campus. The program offers students accessible and relevant sources of support, while mentors benefit from gaining communication, problem-solving and leadership skills. Duclo said that many mentees in the program have gone on to become peer mentors. “The network among students, faculty and staff has expanded and strengthened, and our communities have benefitted by the development of the next generation of leaders,” said Duclo. Campus numbers show that peer mentorship works. Of the 27 first-year students at CMC Rifle who were paired with a mentor during spring 2018, 24 completed their first year of college. Of the 33 mentees who were paired with a mentor in fall 2018, 31 completed their first year of college. The mentors themselves are completing their associate degrees at higher-than-average rates, as well. Duclo noted that some mentees from the first two years of the program have been challenged by homelessness, incarceration, academic suspension, family fights, breakups, mental health issues and DACA and undocumented status. Still, among that group are those who have earned straight As and landed on the Dean’s and President’s lists. “More than one mentee has stated that they would not have made it through… Read more: Student-to-student support: CMC Rifle’s Peer Mentor program creates helpful student network
