Education

  • Doctorate and Master’s degrees in Anthropology and Latin American Studies, University of New Mexico
  • Dissertation: Coffee and Countryside: Small Farmers and Sustainable Development in Las Segovias de Nicaragua.
  • BA in Spanish and Religion from Dickinson College.

I am a cultural anthropologist focused on organic agriculture and sustainable development in Mesoamerica, Nicaragua and the US Southwest. I work with small-scale, organic coffee farmers in the highlands of northern Nicaragua. I have also coordinated and managed a farmer-owned, small-scale, vegetable cooperative based in the South Valley of Albuquerque.

The courses I teach in sustainability and anthropology consider how groups adapt to environmental and social change, both in contemporary settings and ancient contexts. I rely on traditional ecological knowledge, the ethnography of place, and resilience theory as the theoretical basis for inquiry into sustainability education and practice.

My father is from the Black Forest region of Germany and my mother is from Nicaragua. They imparted much of their agrarian and traditional lifestyle on me as a child. I grew up in suburban Philadelphia and lived in Albuquerque and Flagstaff before moving to Steamboat with my wife Kelly and two boys Sebastian and Diego.

Becky Edmiston

Professor, Biology
970-870-4446 | redmiston@coloradomtn.edu

Location: Steamboat Springs

Education

  • MS in Integrative Physiology, University of Colorado Boulder
  • BS in Environmental Biology, Mount Union College

I am interested in the intersection between sustainability and biology. Most folks think of microbes and genetics as something they only need to know about if they want to be a doctor, but they play such a huge role in our natural world as well. To me permaculture is the perfect blend, an applied form of ecology.

I am a beekeeper and love learning about bees. I enjoy sharing what I know as co-advisor of CMC's student Beekeeping Club as well as the president of the Routt County Beekeeping Association. I am also the co-advisor for the Phi Theta Kappa academic honorary.

Research Interests

I've researched bird populations, worked on recovery of an endangered bird in Hawaii, and studied how bird disease can affect their mating success. I've researched a deadly amphibian fungus in Australia and butterfly diversity in Venezuela. Currently my research focus is on undergraduate science education, and I enjoy helping students conduct experiments as well as testing things out on my bees.

Awards

  • CMC Steamboat Springs Faculty of the Year 2011-2012

Personal interests

All things outdoors. In 2010 I thru-hiked the Colorado trail. In 2012 I thru-biked it (with wilderness detours). I like mountain biking, backcountry skiing and cross country skiing.

Academic and Professional Pursuits

Over the past three years I have enjoyed teaching a variety of courses in the English department of CMC's Summit campuses. Additionally, I worked as a freelance writer under the business heading River Bridge Communications. From writing ad copy to text book companion Web sites to articles covering anything from the evolution of skiing to water wars in the West, I wrote my way around Summit County and the surrounding areas. I am currently revising a collection of essays about family, place, and the search for the good life set against the backdrop of northern Minnesota's lake country. Two chapters have been published in Hayden's Ferry Review and The Oakland Review.

  • Ph.D. in International Studies (in progress), Korbel School of International Studies, University of Denver

My academic background is in political science and international studies, and I have a long personal history of involvement in social change movements, particularly in the Central American peace and justice, and international human rights movements. In addition to my regular course load, I take students to Central America each year to study the political, economic, and social roots of poverty and violence. In March 2013, I took a group of students to Cuba to study the nature and evolution of the Cuban Revolution. I am also the advisor of the CMC chapter of Amnesty International, a global human rights organization. My work within the Sustainability Studies program at CMC centers on economic and social equity, with a particular focus on building capacity for action and leadership for social change.
