Anderson Ranch staff showcase recent works

“Kernel,” an all-faculty mixed media show at CMC’s Aspen Gallery kicks off with a reception from 4-7 p.m. on Feb. 28

Feb. 23, 2024 – While they’re usually busy encouraging new artists or working with artists in residence, the staff at Anderson Ranch Arts Center are also all accomplished creators, in a wide variety of media – including watercolors, ceramic sculpture, large-format photography and mixed-media installations.

“Kernel,” a new show at Colorado Mountain College’s Aspen Gallery is devoted to their work, kicks off with a reception from 4-7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 28, and talks by the individual artists beginning at 5:30 p.m. The exhibit runs through May 2 at the gallery.

Lauren Mayer, associate professor of art at CMC and gallery director, says the show is a unique opportunity for notable Anderson Ranch artists to show off their personal creative accomplishments. “This is a way of celebrating the staff as artists,” she said.

And as the exhibit’s title indicates, the show is a chance to get to the seeds of artistic inspiration at the core of the arts center’s year-long operations, which are critical to the organization and all of its internal workings, Mayer added.

The pieces include a variety of ceramic works by the accomplished Betsy Alwin, who also serves as Anderson Ranch’s new creative director. And Andrea Jenkins Wallace, Anderson Ranch’s vice president of artistic affairs, has a chance to display her large-format photographic work.

You will also see a variety of paintings of valley locations by Brian Shure, head of the arts center’s printmaking staff, as well as small and detailed prints by Liz Ferrill, artistic director of painting, drawing and printmaking.

Emil Gorman, lab director and coordinator of digital fabrication, will be showing a laser-cut tissue paper creation with tintype images; Esther Macy Nooner, workshop coordinator, has a number of abstract multimedia prints, while studio coordinator Joanne Seongweon Lee will be displaying a ceramic vessel, a typical piece from her own acclaimed work.

This exhibition is sponsored by Obermeyer Wood Investment Council, ArtShare and the CMC Foundation. CMC’s Aspen Gallery is located in the Aspen Business Center at 0255 Sage Way. Mayer recommends calling the gallery front desk before visiting at 970-925-7740 as hours of operation may vary.
