Steamboat Springs general commencement

At 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 4, CMC Steamboat Springs’ general commencement ceremony will be held at the Strings Music Pavilion just outside Steamboat Springs, at 10:30 a.m. Giving the keynote address will be Pat Milbery.

Milbery is a former professional snowboarder who now focuses on his acclaimed street murals. The self-taught artist’s works, which he creates using vibrant colors, tape and spray paint, can be found in Denver, the Front Range and throughout the Western Slope.

Last winter, Milbery was on his way to Silverton in a blizzard on Highway 550 between Ouray and Silverton. He was on Red Mountain Pass, one of Colorado’s most notoriously treacherous mountain passes, when he felt his vehicle uncontrollably sliding off the road. Instead of fighting the slide, Milbery “dropped in,” and after plummeting several hundred feet, a stand of trees blocked him from going off a cliff. He survived the ordeal with barely a scratch and was able to rescue a piece of his artwork in his vehicle that he planned to donate to his favorite nonprofit, Snowboard Outreach Society. CMC President Carrie Besnette Hauser met Milbery in Silverton just after he had endured this accident and promptly asked him to be CMC Steamboat Springs’ commencement speaker. Milbery will recount lessons learned from this experience and more at Steamboat’s ceremony.

Strings Music Pavilion is at 950 Strings Road in Steamboat Springs.

Tickets for admission to this commencement ceremony are required. Contact Lianne Pyle at CMC with questions.
