Backcountry Navigation
Tired of getting lost or relying on luck to find your way in the backcountry? This challenging class will focus on a variety of navigation techniques in mountainous terrain. Students will need access to a computer with internet along with basic computer skills. This course will consist of: four hours of asynchronous online work to be completed before in-person instruction; an ONLINE, synchronous pre-meeting on Monday, 10/10; and three field days on Fri-Sun, 10/14-10/16.

Mountain Biking
Come ride with us! This course focuses on developing your mountain biking skills and techniques while spending three evenings and two days riding world-class trails in the CMC Spring Valley campus area. Get feedback from trained instructors to take your riding to the next level. All skill levels are welcome. Students can provide their own bike or rent from us. This course consists of one evening session and three field days. The evening session can be joined remotely by making arrangements with the instructor.

Mountain Orientation
This course consists of three in-person evening classroom sessions, then students will then embark on a 4-day, 3-night Labor Day backpacking adventure near the continental divide. All necessary backpacking equipment is provided by the CMC Outdoor Studies Program; a list is posted on Canvas prior to the course start.

River Orientation
This course starts with an online pre-meeting on Wed 9/14 and an in-person class Friday 9/16, followed by two field days on local river stretches. The following week has one evening classroom session on Wed 9/21 and a 3-day, 2-night river trip through Ruby-Horsethief Canyons. Explore the dynamics, ecology, geology, and navigation techniques of river environments while rafting on the upper Colorado River. Students will receive partial credit hours toward Colorado River guide certification. Minimum age 17.

Top Rope Climbing
This course consists of an online pre-meeting on Wed 9/7 and a 3-day, 2-night field experience on the weekend. Climbing and camping equipment provided if needed. Minimum age 18. Top Rope Climbing is the introductory course of a four-class series that includes Sport Climbing (OUT-222), Rock Climbing II (OUT-132) and Climbing Self-Rescue (OUT-165). Topics of instruction include the climbing basics of knot tying, anchors, belaying, rappelling, and climbing movement.

Technical Canyoneering
This course descends through the spectacular slot canyons of Southern Utah- a global destination for canyoneers. Topics include slotcanyon travel, canyonland navigation, and rappelling. This course consists of an online pre-meeting on Monday, Oct 3 and a 6-day, 5-night expedition to southern Utah.

Wilderness First Responder
Upon successful completion of this course students will be awarded Professional Rescuer (CPR) and Wilderness First Responder (WFR) certifications from Desert Mountain Medicine. The online component of this course will open on Canvas on 10/10 and consist of 30 hours of online work that must be completed prior to the in-person classroom dates. Mandatory classroom/field days will take place Wed-Sun 11/9-11/13 from 8a-6p each day. Minimum age 18.
