Jimmy Arbour | After graduating as an Accounting major from Louisiana State University, I began my career as a CPA with the Big 8 firm Deloitte, Haskins & Sells. I left public accounting after nine years when I relocated from Louisiana to Texas. I continued my career in a variety of financial positions in industry, including Corporate Controller of an energy company and Chief Financial & Administrative Officer of a private, German-owned chemical company. Jonathan Beam | I am our instructional reference librarian on campus. I moved to the Steamboat area with my wife, Liz, in 2014, and have been a member of the CMC team since then. In 2020, I earned a Master of Library and Information Studies degree from the University of Alberta, in Edmonton. Outside of work, I enjoy good books, hot cocoa, gaming, and casting suspicious glances at the outdoors through well-insulated windows. I am looking forward to now being able to shush students in tutoring sessions, rather than just in the library itself. | Writing in any class, Research | jlbeam@coloradomtn.edu | Thu 3pm-4pm Steamboat Bristol 320 |

CJ Clarkson | My name is CJ Clarkson, and I have been an avid graphic designer since 2016. In that time, I have had many professional clients, such as Kissane Viola Design in Aspen, the 2018 PyeongChang WinterOlympics, a high-end construction/lending company, a professional NBA Basketball coach, and many more. In that time I have learned that you will take on many jobs you aren’t necessarily comfortable with, or you think you won’t have the skillset to do what is needed. Michelle Dover | I grew up in Denver, Colorado and I have been living in Steamboat Springs for close to three decades. After achieving my graduate degree from Colorado State University, I began teaching English part time at CMC. Up until recently, I was a public librarian for 20 years. Along the way I have raised five children. I now have two grandchildren, whom I adore, of course. I love to listen to people's stories, whether I am reading a book, getting to know students, or traveling the world. Reading, writing, teaching and the sharing of stories and ideas lights my fire. Sarah Fowler | The running joke is that I'm a professional student. After much traditional education (I have a PhD in Organic Chemistry), I took lessons for sailing and skiing, and became a skilled gardener, knitter and home chef. But one-on-one teaching is the most fun! In college, I felt challenged or overwhelmed most of the time. When I admitted that I couldn't do it all on my own, I discovered that my professors actually wanted to know me, friends were good study partners, and life needs priorities and boundaries. Gretchen Hayduk | I’ve loved reading and writing for as long as I can remember. They always transported me to a space where things were more meaningful and truthfully encountered. I’ve always enjoyed talking about the process of writing as a way to learn more about it, so coaching others in their own writing is one of my great joys. In addition to sharing the intricacies of the writing process, I also get to know those whom I’m coaching on the deepest level—a happy side-effect of writing is that in the process, people are their truest selves. | Writing in any class | ghayduk@coloradomtn.edu | Tue 9:30am-11am Spring Valley Quigley Writing Cntr Thu 9:30am-11am Spring Valley Quigley Writing Cntr |

Max Horcasitas | I currently reside in Leadville, where I relocated to go back to school for a career change from being a class I freight train conductor to healthcare. I am currently EMT-B, IV certified, and have completed all prerequisites for nursing school, with a 4.0 GPA and high As in the associated health sciences. I have enjoyed participating in a few search and rescue groups, including the National Park Service SAR at the Black Canyon of the Gunnison, Chaffee County North SAR, and West Elk Mountain Rescue. Truly understanding the entire healthcare science curriculum is important to me, and frequent tutor sessions with Cindy Harmen and others, office hours with my professors, along with hardwork and dedication, have been key to my success. I'm continuing to tutor through the 22/23 school year, as I apply to nursing schools, gain more clinical experience, and prepare for the step to come after nursing to NP, PA, or MD school. Last spring, I was presented with the opportunity to tutor Jonathan Burk's EMT class (my instructor) and Cindy Harmen's Anatomy and Physiology I class (my tutor). I found I really enjoyed the review, study time, as well as helping my peer students understand what may be unclear for them. I have worked with HS students, non-traditional students going back to school like myself, English as a second language students, and some adaptive learners. We all have different learning styles, which I try to tailor for each individual student with time as I continue to study with them. Cellular Biology, Microbiology, Intro to Chem, Chem I, EMT-B, IV therapy, EKG interpretation, Anatomy and Physiology I & II, Human Growth and Development, Nutrition, Pathophysiology, WFR, WFA, OEC, CPR/First AID, and other classes (feel free to ask, and I'll be honest with you!). Marissa Ostrich | Hi, I am Marissa! I am a current student at CMC spring valley campus in the outdoor education major. I am originally from Pennslyvania and so moving out to Colorado by myself was an adjustment. When I first moved out here I lived with the family on their ranch taking care of their 16 animals. This was my first time leaving the house and I loved it but also had to learn to take care of a ranch and how to live on my own. I eventually ended up falling in love with this place by exploring and getting out into the wilderness. From that, I have learned how important it is too put yourself in new situations! When I am not doing school or working I enjoy knitting, crocheting, listening to music, and being outside. Amy Poppie | There was a time when I thought having a college degree and teaching math was just a dream due to the expense and time. After more than a decade working in the restaurant industry during my late twenties, I decided to try college and was nervous that I would not be successful. Fortunately, starting at Front Range Community College with student loans was the best decision I ever made. It was a challenge to learn how to be a student all over again while working full time to support myself. I earned an Associates of Science there in 2006 and continued on. In 2009, I graduated from Kansas State University with a BS in Secondary Mathematics Education. In 2014, I completed my MA in Mathematics with an emphasis on teaching from the University of Northern Colorado. Helping people learn and do any type of mathematics is my passion. I have now taught various mathematics courses for over a decade. In my free time, I love to snowboard, hike, sew, see live music, hang out with my husband and our two dogs, and spend time with family and friends. | Algebra, Math for Liberal Arts, Calculus 1, Calculus 2, Calculus 3, Statistics | apoppie@coloradomtn.edu | https://coloradomtn-edu.zoom.us/j/89000438247?pwd=Y01UTWV3Q1NJUi9INDNmNE5KR1dKdz09 | https://outlook.office365.com/owa/calendar/VirtualTutoringAmyPoppie@coloradomtn.onmicrosoft.com/bookings/ | Join me at these times Tue 3pm-6pm Wed 1pm-4pm Make an Appointment (times vary) |

Jon Seltzer | I’ve worked for more than thirty-five years in the food, retail and distribution industries as a corporate office of a Fortune 500 publicly traded grocery wholesaler and as an independent consultant. As a student, I thrived in a class when I could relate the new material to other classes and life experiences. “Education does not take place in a vacuum, if I can help a student relate class material to their work experience, personal experience as a consumer or current events, previously confusing material becomes much clearer.” | Economics, Business, Management | jmseltzer@coloradomtn.edu | https://outlook.office365.com/owa/calendar/VirtualAccountingBusinessTutoring@coloradomtn.onmicrosoft.com/bookings/ | - | Make an Appointment Receive help by email |

Aaron Spotts | My name is Aaron Spotts, I'm a second year student studying Biochemistry. I will say, in high school I hated chemistry. However in college, I put myself up to the challenge and ended up falling in love with it, and you can too! Like everyone else around here, I love the outdoors, and I'm excited to get out and snowshoe again. | Algebra, Math for Liberal Arts, Statistics, Biology 1, Chemistry 1 | ajspotts@coloradomtn.edu | Tue 6:15pm-8pm Spring Valley Quigley Writing Cntr Thu 6:15pm-8pm Spring Valley Quigley Writing Cntr Fri 10am-12pm Spring Valley Quigley Writing Cntr |

Megan Walker | I have lived in the Yampa Valley for over a decade, raising my family, going to school, working, and adventuring. I know what it means to juggle life and work hard. I first walked through the doors of CMC when my son was just a couple of months old. Since then, I've earned an AA in Outdoor Education and a BA in Sustainability Studies from CMC, and then a Master of Environmental Management (MEM) with a focus on Building Sustainable and Resilient Communities from Western Colorado University. CMC has played an important role in my journey and helped me to discover my passion for education and community. I have taught all ages in both formal and informal settings, focusing on science-based experiential education. I enjoy helping others find meaningful connection to what matters to them, and I hope to help you find connection through your coursework! | Sustainability, Writing in any class, Environmental Sciences, Biology 1, Conservation Biology, Ecology | mjwalker@coloradomtn.edu | https://cmc.webex.com/meet/mjwalker94 | https://coloradomtn-edu.zoom.us/j/3595850014 | Join me at these times Tue 12pm-3pm |

What Do Students Say About Tutoring?

When I was diagnosed with perceptual communication disorder it destroyed my confidence in my academic ability. Thankfully, the tutors at CMC helped instill confidence in me and my ability to grasp concepts that I had previously found perplexing or impossible. Not only has tutoring boosted my confidence, but it has also enabled me to excel as a student and maintain a 4.0 GPA!
